The Yankees decided to snag Paul Goldschmidt away from the St. Louis Cardinals to replace him at first base on a one-year, $12.5 million deal. Not a major commitment by any means, but certainly still a risk given some of the decline that the 2022 National League MVP has shown over the last two seasons. Photos: Royals sweep Rockies with back to back wins on Thursday. The Kansas City Royals took game one of three over the Colorado Rockies at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, April 22. What started off as a slow game, heated up in the ninth inning as Colorado scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead before Freddy Fermin would level the game in the bottom of the ninth, scoring on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the tenth, Fermin would go on to help save the game, throwing a runner out at third base before hitting the RBI walk-off single to give the Royals the 4-3 win in the bottom of the tenth. After a rain delay pushed game two of the three-game series back a day to turn Thursday into a double-header for the Royals and Rockies, the 'Yals closed out Colorado with two victories.

Zach Neto hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Thursday night to avoid a three-game series sweep. Neto, who missed the first three weeks of the season recovering from right-shoulder surgery, lined an 81 mph sweeper from Pirates reliever Chase Shugart (1-1) over the wall in left to snap a 3-all tie and finished with three hits. After winning just one playoff game in 2024, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski opted to keep the majority of the roster intact as constructed. Muncy making adjustments to swing after slow start. Since the Dodgers began the season 8-0, the team has sputtered over their past 17 games, posting a record of 8-9, while most recently getting swept in a two-game series by the Chicago Cubs. The bottom of the lineup has largely been responsible for the team’s inconsistent and below-average offense since suffering their first loss, and third baseman Max Muncy is off to his worst start to a season with the team. Muncy so far is hitting just .178, and while he’s been getting on base more often over the past week (.364 on base in last nine games), his .247 slugging percentage ranks 18th among qualified third baseman and his 57 wRC+ ranks 17th.

One of the issues that the Philadelphia Phillies have run into in the early going of the 2025 MLB regular season is with their bullpen. All-Star Jeff Hoffman and deadline acquisition Carlos Estevez both departed in free agency, signing with the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, respectively. The only addition made to the backend of the bullpen was former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, who was non-tendered earlier in the winter. The Detroit Tigers have the best farm system in all of baseball with a rich prospect pool and a blend of talent both knocking on the door of the MLB level and still a couple of years away. As prospects graduate to the Major Leagues, the hope is that an assembly line of players keep the overall farm system strong. In the Tigers case, current No. 1 prospect Jackson Jobe is obviously about to graduate while No. 2 and No. 3 guys Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle are still at least a year away. Reese Kaplan -- How Sabermetrics Changed Lineup Construction. Yes, we now have Designated HItters in both leagues. What is perhaps a bit slower for us to resolve in our heads is how batting orders are now created as compared to say 30 years ago. If you grade players on various offensive abilities on a scale of 1-5 with ratings being assigned for their batting average, their home run power, their ability to draw walks and how well they steal bases, it would appear that lineups are now constructed very differently. Look no further than the current New York Mets lineup to see that they took a guy who is a positive across the board in all of these categories and inserted him not in the middle-of-the-lineup run producing position, but instead you have Francisco Lindor leading off games which means his first at-bat is a bit of a giveaway in terms of driving in runners.
