Shane Baz pitched seven strong innings and Yandy Díaz hit a sacrifice fly for the Tampa Bay Rays, who beat San Diego 1-0 on Friday night to hand the Padres their fifth loss in seven games. Baz (3-0) allowed just four singles while striking out six and walking one for the Rays, who won their third straight. The Padres suffered consecutive shutouts for the first time this season.

Larnach, Buxton homer as Twins beat Angels 11-4. Trevor Larnach homered, doubled and drove in four runs on Friday as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Los Angeles Angels 11-4. Byron Buxton had a home run and a triple with three RBIs and Mickey Gasper was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs for the Twins, who have won three of four. Pablo López (2-1), making his first start since April 8 after recovering from a strained hamstring, give up two runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts over five innings.

The Yankees decided to snag Paul Goldschmidt away from the St. Louis Cardinals to replace him at first base on a one-year, $12.5 million deal. Not a major commitment by any means, but certainly still a risk given some of the decline that the 2022 National League MVP has shown over the last two seasons. Photos: Royals sweep Rockies with back to back wins on Thursday. The Kansas City Royals took game one of three over the Colorado Rockies at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, April 22. What started off as a slow game, heated up in the ninth inning as Colorado scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead before Freddy Fermin would level the game in the bottom of the ninth, scoring on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the tenth, Fermin would go on to help save the game, throwing a runner out at third base before hitting the RBI walk-off single to give the Royals the 4-3 win in the bottom of the tenth. After a rain delay pushed game two of the three-game series back a day to turn Thursday into a double-header for the Royals and Rockies, the 'Yals closed out Colorado with two victories.

Trailing 3-2 heading into ninth, the A's got going when Max Schuemann drew a one-out walk. Former Detroit Tigers infielder announces retirement. Former Detroit Tigers infielder and utility man Niko Goodrum has retired from baseball at age 33. Goodrum had been playing for the New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, which announced the retirement this week. Goodrum confirmed the news on his Instagram account. Although he was part of eight MLB organizations and played in the big leagues for five teams, his longest tenure came with the Tigers.

Zach Neto hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Thursday night to avoid a three-game series sweep. One of the issues that the Philadelphia Phillies have run into in the early going of the 2025 MLB regular season is with their bullpen. All-Star Jeff Hoffman and deadline acquisition Carlos Estevez both departed in free agency, signing with the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, respectively. The only addition made to the backend of the bullpen was former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, who was non-tendered earlier in the winter. New York Yankees Veteran Has Become Desperately Needed Steady Second Ace. The New York Yankees got back on the right track on Wednesday night with a 5-1 victory to avoid a sweep against the red hot Cleveland Guardians. Entering the season — especially after injuries to two of their most critical starting pitchers — the outlook for the rotation was not optimistic. Unsurprisingly, the back end of the unit has been for the most part a disaster with Carlos Carrasco struggling as well as Clarke Schmidt and Will Warren not quite clicking yet. Detroit Tigers Future Top Prospect Has Massive Day at Plate in Minor Leagues. The Detroit Tigers have the best farm system in all of baseball with a rich prospect pool and a blend of talent both knocking on the door of the MLB level and still a couple of years away. As prospects graduate to the Major Leagues, the hope is that an assembly line of players keep the overall farm system strong. In the Tigers case, current No. 1 prospect Jackson Jobe is obviously about to graduate while No. 2 and No. 3 guys Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle are still at least a year away. By the time Clark and McGonigle are ready to make the transition however — or maybe even before — the top prospect in the organization will almost assuredly be 2024 first round selection in shortstop Bryce Rainer.
