Cardinals storm back to end Padres' winning streak. Pedro Pages cracked a three-run homer to tie the game and Masyn Winn snapped a tie with a two-run double as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to topple the San Diego Padres 8-5 on Saturday. Michael McGreevy (3-2) shrugged off a rough beginning to earn the win, allowing seven hits and four runs over six innings. JoJo Romero got the last four outs for his first save despite yielding a two-out RBI single to Freddy Fermin in the ninth. SF Giants fall back below .500 with blowout loss to New York Mets. The Giants dropped back below .500 with a 12-6 blowout loss to the New York Mets on Saturday evening at Citi Field. San Francisco (55-56) has now lost 11 of their its 14 games to begin the second half and are currently 6.5 games back of the San Diego Padres the final NL Wild Card spot. Tyler Rogers, who appeared in 392 games for the Giants, faced his old teammates as he made his Mets debut. Rogers allowed a single to Heliot Ramos on a grounder that bounced off first base but pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Pete Alonso hits career milestone with no-doubter vs. Giants. The New York Mets are attempting to snap a four-game skid that allowed the Philadelphia Phillies to retake the division lead. Alonso got New York on the board in the first inning with a three-run homer. San Francisco Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng left a 94 mph four-seamer over the middle of the plate. Alonso squared up the high fastball and drove it 428 feet to center for a no-doubter dinger.

Yankees make 2 more inexplicable mistakes against Marlins. The Yankees have been making that-can't-happen plays routinely this summer. In just the first two innings of Saturday's game against the Marlins — coming off a disastrous 13-12 loss to Miami on Friday night — two more head-scratchers were added to that list. Nationals May Come to Regret Not Trading Ace Pitcher MacKenzie Gore. The 2025 MLB Trade Deadline has now come and gone, and the Washington Nationals were unsurprisingly one of the biggest sellers. This season has shown that the Nats are still firmly in rebuilding mode, and as such, it was a no-brainer for the front office to sell high on several key assets that were unlikely to play a role in the long-term vision of the franchise. Washington certainly got a fair return on the players they shipped off to contenders, but one guy they decided not to keep around despite his monumental trade value was the Ace of their rotation in MacKenzie Gore. Interim GM Mike DeBartolo decided against shipping Gore off to the highest bidder, though, despite some pretty sizable interest around the league, and this could be a decision the team comes to regret down the line.

Padres Make Massive Michael King Announcement Hinting at Impending Return. The San Diego Padres announced starting pitcher Michael King will take a significant step towards his return to the rotation, as he will make a rehab start for Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. King landed on the injured list May 25 after being scratched from his May 24 start against the Atlanta Braves with right shoulder inflammation, though was later diagnosed with a pinched nerve. The Padres made two additions to their rotation at the trade deadline in JP Sears and Nestor Cortes, and King will be another solid addition to their arsenal. Before his injury, King had performed at an even better level than last year, where he placed seventh in NL Cy Young voting.

Mark Wiedmer: Can Bad Braves Roar Past Reds In Bristol?. Every week for most of this Major League Baseball season, there's been a growing opinion that it can't get any worse for the Atlanta Braves. But as the Bravos join the Cincinnati Reds tonight at Bristol Motor Speedway for an otherwise meaningless game that will reportedly break a 71-year-old single-game MLB attendance record, I'll nominate this week as one of the worst in franchise history. Or don't you think losing 1-0 in 10 innings in Kansas City, blowing an 11-3 lead in Cincy by giving up eight runs in the eighth inning before winning 12-11 on two sacrifice flies in the 10th and losing Ronald Acuna Jr. But let's momentarily break from that mindset to focus on Bristol, which will be the first regular-season MLB game ever played in Tennessee.

New York Mets reliever given faster injury timeline. One of the New York Mets' bullpen arms appears to have avoided the worst outcome despite a season-ending injury. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Mets reliever Max Kranick did not undergo Tommy John surgery, which had been a possibility after he suffered a right flexor strain. Instead, he had flexor tendon repair surgery, giving him a better chance of returning in 2026. Kranick, 28, posted a 3.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 16.9% strikeout rate, and 3.4% walk rate over 37 innings of relief for the Mets this season.

The Cincinnati Reds made a few roster moves to clear room for their trade deadline acquisitions ahead of Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. Miguel Andujar and Zack Littell were added to the active roster prior to Saturday's game in Bristol. TJ Friedl was reinstated from the restricted list. Connor Joe and Lyon Richardson were optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Andujar was batting .298 with six home runs and a .765 OPS this season with the Athletics. The 30-year-old hit 27 home runs in his rookie season in 2018, but has hit only 22 in the seven years since. He would finish second to Shohei Ohtani in Rookie of the Year voting in 2018. Before the New York Yankees finalized the deals for any of the three relievers that they ended up with before Thursday's trade deadline passed, they lost out on one of their top targets to their crosstown rivals. SNY's Andy Martino reported that the Yankees were in pursuit of St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley before they sent him to the New York Mets on Wednesday, and that the Bronx Bombers' failure to land him stemmed from their hesitancy to part with their top young talent. "They tried for Ryan Helsley and would have had to give up at least one of those top top guys," Martino wrote on X.

David Peterson continues this marvelous trend for the Mets. David Peterson continued to establish himself as the ace of the New York Mets' rotation after his latest start. Despite losing their fourth straight game on Friday, dropping their series opener to the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings, Peterson still turned in a fine outing for the Mets. The lefty went six innings, allowing just two earned runs (both in the second inning) on four hits and two walks while striking out four. It's time for us to sit back and reevaluate how David Stearns has handled this roster refurbishment as the Mets attempt to reinforce their team by adding strengths while simultaneously not necessarily addressing all of the problem at hand. For the Mets to obtain Gregory Soto, Tylor Rogers, Ryan Helsey and Cedric Mullins it took capital.
