4/18/25 | Veteran backup catcher showcases defensive skill in loss to Orioles: Guardians breakfast today. Opposing base runners be warned: Do not sleep on Austin Hedges when he is behind the plate. The Guardians veteran backup catcher showed exactly why in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Orioles. “I don't have the luxury of being able to take pitches off back there,” Hedges said. Hedges proved his value as a backstop by picking Ramon Urias off at third base in the third inning on a throw down to Gabriel Arias. Source: https://www.cleveland.com/guardians/2025/04/vetera... |
4/10/25 | Guardians' Stephen Vogt recalls his own play at the plate that never materialized. 3/26/25 | Guardians will struggle against a stacked AL Central in 2025, miss playoffs: Joe Noga. In the aftermath of losing Game 5 of the American League Championship series to the Yankees in October, Guardians veteran catcher Austin Hedges sounded like he was ready to run it back as soon as possible. “The job's not done,” Hedges said in his postgame remarks to reporters. With spring training officially in the rearview mirror, “next year” is finally now. The question is: how far will that roadmap take them against an AL Central Division loaded with contenders? 3/10/25 | The most important .186 hitter in the majors? Why everybody loves Austin Hedges. It is 8 o'clock on a February morning in the Cleveland Guardians clubhouse, and Austin Hedges is, as he often is, shirtless, which always amused one of his managers, Terry Francona, because, as the 65-year-old skipper put it, "with his shirt off, he looks like me." Hedges is, as always, talking, teaching and laughing, as are his teammates, though it's hard to imagine a group ever laughing harder than after Game 1 of the 2023 World Series, when the Texas Rangers' Adolis Garcia hit a walk-off home run, while Hedges, in the hole at the time, celebrated wildly -- inspiring an Instagram meme with what Hedges might have been thinking at that moment: Great, I don't have to hit! "It was hilarious ... it wasn't very nice, but it was hilarious," Hedges said. Source: https://africa.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44123618/ml... |
2/26/25 | Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh Credits Unlikely Source For Helping Him Win Platinum Glove. Raleigh played in 153 games last year, most of them at catcher, and took home both the Gold and Platinum Glove awards in the American League. While his success can be attributed to good M's coaching and his own great talent and work ethic, Raleigh also got some help from an unlikely source: Cleveland Guardians backstop Austin Hedges. According to a recent story in The Athletic, Raleigh called Hedges after the 2023 season and the pair started working on things like pitch receiving.
