2/16/25 | Red Sox catcher competition includes 2 trade acquisitions, 31-year-old on minors deal. The Red Sox made it clear to catcher Seby Zavala that he would have a real opportunity to compete for the Opening Day roster when they signed him early in the offseason (Nov. 19). “Talking with my agent and the front office, it was a good chance to compete to be at the big league level,” Zavala said Sunday at JetBlue Park. The 31-year-old Zavala and two offseason trade acquisitions, Carlos Narváez and Blake Sabol, will compete to be Connor Wong's backup. Source: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/02/red-sox-ca... |

11/20/24 | Red Sox Fill Sneaky Need With Under-The-Radar Addition. The Red Sox made an under-the-radar addition this week, perhaps answering a lingering question in the process. Boston signed former Seattle Mariners catcher Seby Zavala to a minor league deal, per the MiLB transaction log. It's certainly not a move that will move the needle on paper but it fills a lingering need with catchers Reese McGuire and Danny Jansen both hitting free agency this offseason. Zavala is a journeyman, carrying a career .205/.271/.342 slash line across stints with the Mariners, Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks.
