4/19/25 Yankees' Fernando Cruz fooling batters with 'glitch pitch,' new mindset. TAMPA — As Fernando Cruz stumbled through his first spring training with the Yankees , the reliever experimented with just about everything a pitcher can. That included the righty's arsenal, where he stands on the mound, his mechanics, and whether long sleeves could prevent tipping. However, Cruz's biggest change was learning to stay under control on the mound. That adjustment was inspired by a conversation with bullpen coach Mike Harkey. “He just talks to me straight up and doesn't hide anything. He doesn't go through emotions and anything. He just tells you what you're doing and exactly what you need to get ready,” Cruz said. “We had a conversation in spring training that changed everything.

3/25/25 Yankees' key reliever made slew of changes this spring, from pitches to wardrobe. Change has been the operative word for Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz this spring. Yes, he's in a new uniform after getting dealt from the Reds to the Yankees over this past offseason in the Jose Trevino trade, but that's just the start of it. Since Cruz got to the Yankees, he's made a slew of adjustments. Cruz scrapped his cutter, he added two new pitches, he changed where he stands on the mound (moving from the first base side of the rubber to the third base side), he altered his approach in attacking hitters and he even started wearing sleeves under his jersey.

3/20/25 Yankees to reliever's 11.12 spring ERA, latest 'rough' outing. TAMPA, Fla. — Fernando Cruz came over to the Yankees in the Jose Trevino trade with the Reds this past offseason with some of the best strikeout numbers of any reliever in baseball. His swing-and-miss rate and nasty splitter instantly took the ceiling of the Yankees' bullpen to new heights. He has the potential to be a dynamic weapon sixth or seventh inning for this club with set-up man Luke Weaver and closer Devin Williams to follow. But Cruz has weaknesses as well. He can be wild, he doesn't keep the ball on the ground and he has a tendency for giving up hard contact. All of those factors have been exposed in his six Grapefruit League appearances, including what Yankees manager Aaron Boone
