1/22/25 | Former Red Sox Catcher Reportedly Lands With NL Central Club. Reese McGuire spanned across parts of three seasons as the backup catcher for the Boston Red Sox. Now, he's reportedly found his next professional home. McGuire reportedly signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, per Just Baseball's Aram Leighton . The catcher joins his fourth MLB franchise after the Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. The 2013 first-round draft pick slashed .264/.315/.370 for a .686 OPS in 161 career games for the Red Sox. Boston designated McGuire for assignment last summer after their rental acquisition of Danny Jansen at the trade deadline from the Blue Jays. 11/20/24 | Red Sox sign backup catcher in what could signal 2025 solution. Former Boston Red Sox catchers Reese McGuire and Danny Jansen are both free agents after the 2024 campaign, which creates an unexpected issue for the club's upcoming offseason. Boston desperately needs quality pitching to bolster its rotation and prevent another bullpen breakdown, but, as of the end of last season, Connor Wong is the club's only major league catcher. Kyle Teel, the Sox's top catching prospect, may not be ready to debut by Opening Day after a brief adjustment period in Triple-A in August and September. Suddenly, the Red Sox needed to add a backup catcher to their list of offseason needs. Source: https://bosoxinjection.com/red-sox-sign-backup-cat... |
11/12/24 | Red Sox already got beat to key free agent catcher after Angels' move. The Boston Red Sox have lost two of their three catchers to free agency this offseason. Reese McGuire and Danny Jansen will hit the market, and the Red Sox aren't expected to sign them back because the organization can do better. Boston's top catching prospect, Kyle Teel, may not be major-league-ready out of spring training. Like Jansen and McGuire, the Red Sox also need to hit the catching market.
