4/22/25 | Relievers in spotlight as Giants square off with Brewers. Two teams that got an opportunity to show off shiny toys out of their bullpen in the series opener go head-to-head again on Tuesday when the San Francisco Giants look for a second straight win over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Robbie Ray and Hayden Birdsong combined to limit the Brewers to two runs in eight innings Monday, but much of the talk among the Giants afterward focused on Camilo Doval's seven-pitch, 1-2-3 ninth inning. Coincidentally, Doval's splashy finish came immediately following the highly anticipated major league debut of the Brewers' Craig Yoho in the bottom of the eighth. 4/12/25 | How SF Giants enjoyed unintended benefit from Friday's rain-shortened win. The Giants' six-inning, 9-1 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night wasn't a pleasant experience for any parties involved — fans, players or otherwise. Following Thursday's off day, manager Bob Melvin only had to use starter Robbie Ray and reliever Spencer Bivens on Friday, the latter throwing just one inning. With San Francisco just beginning a stretch of 17 games in 17 days, Melvin said it was “huge” for his bullpen to get a blow. “Bivens was the only guy that was up one time before that, too,” Melvin said. 4/06/25 | MLB roundup: Giants sink Mariners for 6th straight win. Robbie Ray overcame five walks to hold the Seattle Mariners to just one run over six innings, Jung Hoo Lee and Matt Chapman combined for four doubles and four runs, and the San Francisco Giants won their sixth in a row Saturday night with a 4-1 home win. Pitching against the team that signed him to a five-year, $115 million free-agent deal in December 2021, Ray (2-0) surrendered a solo home run to Dylan Moore in the fifth. An overturned call and a pitch clock violation, each of which had instant ramifications. In the end, the Giants ended Sunday's matinee at Great American Ball Park with a 6-3 win over the Reds, taking two of three from Cincinnati to open the season. 3/25/25 | Tigers' Tarik Skubal marvels at Robbie Ray throwing pitch he taught him. Robbie Ray should be expecting a text message from Tarik Skubal. Later that evening, Ray mostly mowed through the Tigers' lineup in a 6-4 exhibition win — while wielding Skubal's own weapon. The two left-handers share more than similar arm slots and company in the exclusive club of Cy Young winners. The changeup Ray added to his arsenal this spring is a product of a text message the 33-year-old veteran sent to the Hayward native this offseason. 3/24/25 | San Francisco Giants Versatile Slugger Projected for Impressive 20/20 Season. What is going to determine the level of success for the San Francisco Giants during the 2025 season is their offensive production. Former Cy Young Award winners Robbie Ray and Justin Verlander have both been in prime form during spring training, providing a lot of optimism. Younger pitchers Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp have both been excellent and there is hope that Jordan Hicks has turned a corner and will produce as well. 3/22/25 | Former Cy Young Winner New Ace in San Francisco Giants Pocket After Incredible Spring. Going into the regular season, the San Francisco Giants have a veteran talent ready to step up to the mound. Former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray had a breakout spring performance, as he focused on perfecting his changeup grip. During the offseason, Ray took the advice of reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and learned the ins and outs of the changeup grip. Skubal's changeup pitch is one of the best in the game, so for Ray to now have that knowledge and skill could be a huge advantage for the Giants. 3/13/25 | Robbie Ray's healthy spring a boon to SF Giants rotation. Robbie Ray has made the most of his fresh start this spring. The former Cy Young winner missed his first camp with the Giants — and the first three and a half months of last season — recovering from Tommy John surgery. Ray, 33, arrived in Arizona last month healthy and is looking every bit like the pitcher who won a combined 25 games and struck out nearly 500 batters in 2021 and 2022 with the Blue Jays and Mariners, respectively. The lefty delivered 4 1/3 strong innings on Thursday against the Texas Rangers, allowing just three hits and two earned run while striking out eight batters on 65 pitches. 3/09/25 | San Francisco Giants Ace Debuts New Pitch on Advice from Cy Young Winner. The San Francisco Giants have an old dog on their roster that is hoping to learn a new trick. MLB's David Adler recently did a piece highlighting some of the new pitches that have been debuted so far in spring training with great success. In it, he pointed out Giants southpaw Robbie Ray's new changeup. Adler shared that Ray had asked reigning Triple Crown and Cy Young champion Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers for his changeup grip. 3/02/25 | SF Giants' Ray continues dazzling with new pitch in second Cactus League start. The Giants knew they were never going to see the best version of Robbie Ray last year. Not after he underwent Tommy John surgery and went 15 months between major-league starts. This spring, by contrast, the Giants can allow themselves to get excited at the prospect of a fully healthy Robbie Ray. “It's not hard at all to get excited,” manager Bob Melvin said with a smile after the Giants beat the Angels, 9-5. 2/26/25 | San Francisco Giants Success Will Be Determined by Impact of Young Players. The San Francisco Giants know that they have some major obstacles to overcome if they want to rise in the standings during the 2025 season. Expecting Verlander to step right into the role Snell vacated is unrealistic, but he adds another reliable arm for manager Bob Melvin to rely on along with Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks. 2/25/25 | How SF Giants' Ray re-discovered old pitch with help from fellow Cy Young Award winner. At the end of last year's postseason, the Giants' Robbie Ray sent a text message to Tarik Skubal — one lefty to another. Skubal the Detroit Tigers' ace, had just won the 2024 American League Cy Young Award, the changeup being one of his foundational pitches. The changeup hadn't been a mainstay in Ray's arsenal in nearly a decade, but Ray wanted another weapon to use against right-handed hitters. “He kind of just sent me the kitchen sink,” said Ray, who was the AL Cy Young winner in 2021 with Toronto. 2/01/25 | The Way Of Robbie Ray. As the great philosopher EWB once said, "History repeats. Neat. Repeat History. Complete. Skeet skeet." OK, I can't tell if that was me or Lil' John who wrote that. But much like Nirvana came back, I'm here to remind you, again, that Robbie Ray is OK. Source: https://razzball.com/the-way-of-robbie-ray/... |
