4/14/25 What Alex Cora Made Clear About Two-Time All-Star Joining Red Sox. Yasmani Grandal currently has more MLB pedigree and accomplishments under his belt than any other catcher in the Red Sox organization. The Red Sox signed Grandal to a minor-league contract last week in wake of Connor Wong landing on the injured list due to a fractured finger. Manager Alex Cora spoke about the transaction Sunday before Boston's win over the Chicago White Sox. “A veteran,” Cora told reporters about Grandal, per MassLive.

4/13/25 How It Took Video Game Console, Dog For All-Star To Sign With Red Sox. Yasmani Grandal was at peace if his MLB career was over after 13 seasons. The veteran catcher's free agency stretched through spring training and into the beginning of the season, but he enjoyed spending the extended time with his family, including his two young sons. Grandal was actually getting ready to take his seven-year-old son to his first baseball game when the Boston Red Sox came calling since they were in need of a catcher following an injury to Connor Wong. It was an opportunity Grandal couldn't pass up.

4/11/25 Red Sox Sign Former Pirates Catcher. PITTSBURGH — A former Pittsburgh Pirates catcher has signed with another MLB team, giving him a chance to play again in 2025. The Boston Red Sox signed catcher Yasmani Grandal to a minor league contract, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Grandal was born in Havana, Cuba and played in the infield, shortstop and second base, on the Cuba junior national team. He would emigrate to the United States at 10 years old in July 1999 with his mother, stepfather and maternal grandparents, making it to the country via the lottery system and eventually earned citizenship five years late in 2004. 4/11/25 Catcher Yasmani Grandal reportedly joins Red Sox on minor-league deal. The Boston Red Sox are adding some much-needed depth at catcher, reportedly signing former All-Star Yasmani Grandal to a minor-league deal. The Red Sox needed to add another catcher after losing Connor Wong to a fractured finger earlier this week. Robert Murray of Fansided was first to report Boston's pact with Grandal, who played 72 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024.

3/19/25 MLB Insider urges Padres to sign ex-Dodgers All-Star who is still available. The San Diego Padres were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in last year's postseason. Yasmani Grandal is still available in free agency and MLB insider Robert Murray believes the Padres should sign him. "Let's make one thing clear: Grandal is not the same player he was when he made those All-Star teams with the Dodgers and Brewers," wrote Murray.

3/14/25 Former Dodgers All-Star Could Suddenly Retire as 2025 Season Nears. A former All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers is contemplating retirement after reportedly rejecting a contract offer from the Atlanta Braves. According to Francys Romero, Yasmani Grandal "declined the offer about a month ago" and "is hoping for other opportunities in the near future, but if those don't materialize, he may be considering retirement." During his time with the Dodgers from 2015 to 2018, Grandal made his first All-Star appearance and played a key role in helping the team secure four division titles and two National League pennants. Los Angeles has a rich history of strong catchers, and Grandal fit right in.

According to a recent report from Cuban Baseball Insider Francys Romero, free agent catcher Yasmani Grandal turned down a contract offer from the Atlanta Braves earlier this offseason. If nothing else comes up in the near future, Grandal could consider retirement. It's unclear why Grandal would turn down the offer, but the Braves did have an established starter in Sean Murphy. Perhaps Grandal didn't want to join a clear backup role and was waiting for a starting job to emerge.

According to a report from Francys Romero on social media, veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal is getting interest on the free agent market with less than a week until pitchers and catchers report for spring training. Grandal, a 36-year-old native of Cuba, is a 13-year veteran of the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Yasmani Grandal hit the first of the Pittsburgh Pirates' five homers and they never trailed in a 9-4 win over the New York Yankees, who saw Aaron Judge strike out five times Saturday. Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the fifth and laced an RBI double in the eighth for the American League East-winning Yankees (93-68), who missed a chance to clinch the top seed in the AL playoffs. New York entered Saturday a game ahead of the AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians but has the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series 4-2.

The Chicago Cubs ran wild on the basepaths against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, achieving a feat that they haven't done in more than 100 years. The Cubs swiped eight bases against the Pirates, taking advantage of a rough day behind the plate for Yasmani Grandal. Pete Crow-Armstong led the barrage with three stolen bases, giving him 26 on the season. Ian Happ also stole two bases in the game, while Seiya Suzuki, Nico Hoerner and Cody Bellinger all got in on the fun.

Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Bryan De La Cruz was hit by a pitch from Alexis Díaz before Grandal connected for his seventh homer — a drive into the first row above the Clemente Wall in right field. It was Grandal’s fourth career game-ending homer. Aroldis Chapman handled the ninth for the win. Elly De La Cruz reached on a leadoff single, but Chapman picked him off before striking out Tyler Stephenson and TJ Friedl. Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits for Pittsburgh, which won three of four in the series.
