4/01/25 Gleyber Torres could really help Detroit Tigers if he agrees to play third base. It's already been a rocky season for the Detroit Tigers on the injury front. Free agent starting pitcher signee Alex Cobb went down before spring training games began. Shortly after, the Tigers lost two-third of their starting outfield in Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling. Then, in the second game against the Dodgers, the Tigers lost second baseman Gleyber Torres to an oblique injury -- on a home run swing, no less.

3/18/25 Detroit Tigers Injured Veteran Free Agent Pitcher Makes Huge Recovery Step. The Detroit Tigers may soon have some very positive injury news coming their way after what has been a rough spring in that department. According to the team's weekly medical update per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb is scheduled to throw a bullpen session tomorrow after missing all of spring training to this point with right hip inflammation. Cobb, who was signed this offseason on a one-year deal worth $15 million and potentially up to $17 million from innings-based incentives, has not been able to throw a bullpen to this point, though by the sounds of it is well on schedule in his recovery.

2/22/25 Detroit Tigers Righty Alex Cobb Provides Positive Update on Injured Hip. Speaking on Saturday morning at spring training, Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb said that his injured hip is feeling better. Alex Cobb (PRP injection in hip) played catch for the first time yesterday, things are trending positively. "Not all the way over the hump, but it feels a lot better." The 37-year-old Cobb missed much last season with injury as well but did go 2-1 in three regular season appearances.

2/18/25 Detroit Tigers Must Be Mindful Not To Block Rookie's Development at Key Position. The Detroit Tigers have started up Spring Training and the team will be having high expectations coming into the new campaign. It was a strong offseason overall for the Tigers. Despite a slow start in terms of additions, Detroit did a good job strengthening a couple of areas of need. The additions of Alex Cobb and Jack Flaherty in the starting rotation have helped not only with the depth of the unit, but Flaherty will be able to provide them with some high-end talent.

2/12/25 Tigers expect RHP Alex Cobb to miss start of season with hip injury after signing $15M, 1-year deal. The Detroit Tigers are expecting Alex Cobb to miss the start of the season. The team’s injury report at the start of spring training Wednesday included Cobb, who had an injection last week to treat hip inflammation that developed as the right-hander was throwing. Cobb has had hip surgery twice. He signed a $15 million, one-year contract two months ago. The Tigers added him to join a rotation led by AL Triple Crown and CY Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and recently signed Jack Flaherty. Cobb was an All-Star with the San Francisco Giants in 2023.

2/12/25 Tigers RHP Alex Cobb (hip) sidelined for a month. February 12 - Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Cobb will be sidelined for about a month with right hip inflammation, manager A.J. Hinch confirmed Wednesday. The 37-year-old former All-Star signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Tigers in free agency in December. Hinch added that Cobb's recovery timeline means he is unlikely to be ready by the March 27 season opener against the host Los Angeles Dodgers. Cobb received a platelet-rich plasma injection last week after experiencing issues with his hip while he was building his throwing volume for spring training. He had surgery on his left hip following the 2023 season and made only three starts for the Cleveland Guardians in 2024, going

1/22/25 Tigers listed as top fit for former Astros $189 million 2x All-Star. The Detroit Tigers have had a relatively quiet offseason. They've made a few value signings, bringing right-hander Alex Cobb and infielder Gleyber Torres into the fold, but they have yet to make a big splash. All offseason long, they have been linked to third baseman Alex Bregman, but have made little to no progress on a potential signing. However, Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com believes Detroit is the best fit for the two-time World Series champion. "It might seem like the Tigers' window of contention is just opening after the club made a surprising run to the playoffs in 2024. But with reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal under team control for only two more seasons, Detroit

1/18/25 Detroit Tigers Bring In Viral Knuckleball Pitcher on Minor League Deal. The Detroit Tigers brought in Alex Cobb to boost their rotation, and while he's certainly not a headlining addition by any means, he'll provide a veteran presence to this clubhouse that is full of young players. Throughout the winter, the Tigers have been connected to multiple high-end starters with the idea they would try to pair another ace-caliber arm with Tarik Skubal. While the likelihood of that taking place continues to be slim despite all the reunion rumors surrounding Detroit and Jack Flaherty, they were able to add a viral sensation to the organization by signing knuckleball pitcher Kenny Serwa to a minor league deal. Tread Athletics is a performance center that is really starting to increase their footprint in the sport of baseball, and after the video of Serwa's high-velocity knuckleball started making the rounds on social media, the Tigers seemingly wasted little time getting him into their organization.

1/15/25 Detroit Tigers Facing New Competition From Chicago Cubs for All-Star Free Agent. Since the offseason began, people have been waiting for the Detroit Tigers to make a splash, whether it was in free agency or via trade. No long-term deals have been handed out, as the only two additions made were starting pitcher Alex Cobb and second baseman Gleyber Torres. The Tigers have made it clear that they want to see how their young core looks after the unprecedented run they went on at the end of the 2024 season, overcoming a double-digit deficit in the standings to earn a wild card spot. Detroit wants to build a sustainable winner, not be a one-off flash in the pan.

1/13/25 Detroit Tigers Smartly Increased Their Payroll This Offseason to Boost Roster. The Detroit Tigers are coming off of a surprisingly productive season that saw them make an unexpected trip to the playoffs. The Tigers have two new expensive contracts to thank for the increase. Alex Cobb and Gleyber Torres each received one-year, $15 million contracts this offseason.

1/07/25 Detroit Tigers May Be Strong Trade Destination for Former Yankees All-Star. The Detroit Tigers were seen as a team entering the offseason who was all but guaranteed to add to the starting rotation with the possibility of multiple acquisitions being discussed. To this point, other than signing veteran righty Alex Cobb to a one-year contract, there has been nothing significant added and Tigers brass has stated they actually like what they have and do not anticipate making other major additions. If that's to be believed, Detroit becoming involved in the trade market for another starter feels unlikely, but perhaps things could change if the right player became available. In his Tuesday morning column, USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported the New York Yankees are "actively trying to deal" Marcus Stroman and the $18 million salary he comes strapped with.

1/05/25 Detroit Tigers New All-Star Infielder Not Expected To Return Next Offseason. The Detroit Tigers head into the upcoming season with a couple of acquisitions on one-year deals who they hope will make a huge difference. Alex Cobb was the first major domino to fall for the Tigers in free agency, and the goal is for the 13-year veteran to be a major piece of the starting rotation. The Tigers would go on to make a move that was fairly well received when they signed New York Yankees two-time All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres on a one-year deal worth $15 million. Torres struggled by his standards in 2024, but he's still just 28 years old and brings some serious right-handed power to the lineup along with plate discipline.

1/01/25 Tigers edge Red Sox, Blue Jays in poll predicting landing spot for $100M All-Star. The Detroit Tigers may have only signed one-year deals for free agents this winter, but many seem to think there are bigger things to come. Starting pitcher Alex Cobb and second baseman Gleyber Torres signed identical one-year, $15 million contracts to pace the Tigers' spending so far this winter. Both signings have upside, but it's hard to say the Tigers have made a big leap towards the playoffs. If the Tigers were to sign two-time Houston Astros All-Star Alex Bregman, however?

12/28/24 Detroit Tigers Have Pitching Prospect Catching Eye of Evaluators After Strong Season. The Detroit Tigers are a team that a lot of people are keeping a close eye on after the unprecedented run they finished the 2024 season on. Coming into the offseason, many people thought that the Tigers would go on a spending spree, looking to augment their emerging young core with established veterans. If Detroit is going to be a perennial playoff team in the American League and eventually contend for the World Series, some upgrades were needed on the roster. To this point, the biggest moves have been one-year, $15 million contracts handed out to starting pitcher Alex Cobb and second baseman Gleyber Torres in free agency.

12/22/24 Detroit Tigers Signing Alex Cobb Listed as Massive Overpay This Offseason. It has been a fairly quiet offseason for the Detroit Tigers, who appeared like a team who would make some noise this winter. Coming off an incredible 2024 campaign, the Tigers are looking to build off snapping their lengthy playoff drought. The second half of the season was quite the run by Detroit, but if they are going to sustain success, moving forward, they will need to make some upgrades. With a couple of needs in the lineup and the starting rotation, it has been a bit surprising to see the Tigers being so quiet of late.

12/16/24 Detroit Tigers New $15M Starter Alex Cobb Says He Contemplated Retirement. The Detroit Tigers made a big time addition to the starting rotation with a $15 million financial commitment to veteran journeyman right hander Alex Cobb. The 37-year-old can actually earn up to $17 million on his one-year deal with the Tigers if he hits certain innings incentives, but regardless it's safe to say that Detroit felt comfortable in thinking they can get solid production from Cobb at the number they signed him at.

12/16/24 Alex Cobb thought about retirement. Now Detroit Tigers are paying him $15 million. Two months ago, Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Cobb — who turned 37 years old — thought about retiring from his 13-year career as an MLB player.

12/13/24 Tigers' 2025 roster projection: Where things stand today. The Detroit Tigers have made only one notable move this winter, signing veteran starting pitcher Alex Cobb to a one-year deal, but more additions could be in the works. While the Tigers probably aren't done, this projection serves as a snapshot of where things stand today and who might be squeezed out with each subsequent roster move. The Tigers probably aren't done, but consider this a good ledger to see where things stand today and who might be squeezed with every subsequent roster addition.
