The Boston Red Sox and Adam Ottavino went in different directions after he didn't make the club's Opening Day roster. Ottavino elected free agency and then quickly re-signed with New York. 4/08/25 Yankees designate Adam Ottavino for assignment again. Veteran reliever Adam Ottavino has had a whirlwind of a 2025 season despite appearing in only three games out of the bullpen. After pitching in spring training with the Boston Red Sox and ultimately getting released in late March, Ottavino signed with the New York Yankees. The Yankees designated Ottavino for assignment after two outings before he re-signed with the ball club as a free agent a few days later. On Tuesday, however, the Yankees announced that Ottavino was designated for assignment once again.

The New York Yankees signed veteran right-hander Adam Ottavino to a major league contract on Monday, days after designating the 39-year-old for assignment. The team added Ottavino to the 25-man roster and optioned LHP Brent Headrick to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees DFA'd Ottavino to make room for RHP Devin Williams' return from the paternity list. Ottavino declined a minor-league assignment, becoming a free agent, leading to Monday's signing. The Yankees lost 5-4 in 11 innings as New York failed to score once in extra. With Saturday marking a roster deadline for teams around baseball carrying veteran players on minor league deals, the Red Sox informed two accomplished relievers that they won't be on the Opening Day roster. Boston won't carry righty Adam Ottavino or lefty Matt Moore for the start of the regular season, a major league source confirmed. Both Ottavino and Moore have the ability to decide whether they want to opt out and re-test the free agent market or remain with the Red Sox at Triple-A.
