3/24/25 Angels 2025 preview: Roster breakdown. While the Angels believe they have a strong core of young starters who could eventually fill this rotation with homegrown talent, they've been assembling a group with enough veterans so the young pitchers have to force their way into the big leagues. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi signed a three-year, $63 million deal and the Angels put him at the top, with the Opening Day nod. The only homegrown pitcher who was guaranteed a spot in the rotation was right-hander José Soriano, who earned the role with a 3.42 ERA in 20 starts in his first time starting in the majors. After that, the Angels had one spot left, and by the end of camp they had narrowed it down to right-hander Jack Kochanowicz and left-hander Reid Detmers.

2/20/25 Angels view Yusei Kikuchi as Opening Day starter and leader. When Ron Washington casually mentioned Thursday morning that left-hander Yusei Kikuchi was going to be the Angels' Opening Day starter, he didn't seem to think that was much of a revelation. Washington, in fact, said he hadn't even told Kikuchi. “It's obvious,” the Angels manager said. Kikuchi signed a three-year, $63-million deal, the largest free-agent deal for an Angels pitcher since C.J. Wilson in 2011.

1/14/25 Angels Linked to $37M All-Star Pitcher in Potential Blockbuster Trade. The Los Angeles Angels have had an eventful offseason thus far. After some bad luck with injuries and overall underwhelming production in the 2024 campaign, the Angels finished 63-99. In a clear attempt to address major pitching issues, the Halos signed southpaw Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year, $63 million deal and right-hander Kyle Hendricks to a one-year, $2.5 million deal. The Angels also signed veteran catcher Travis d'Arnaud and shortstop Kevin Newman this offseason to try and help offensive struggles — but with Mike Trout projected to have another huge year, it would make sense to continue the pitching focus.
