2/26/25 | Cubs new 2-time All-Star reveals why he turned down better offers in free agency. Even as he enters his age-40 season, Justin Turner remains a productive player. The two-time All-Star split time between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners last season, posting a .354 on-base percentage and a 114 OPS+ in 139 games. Though he no longer possesses the power or defensive capabilities of his Los Angeles Dodgers years, Turner still represents a threat to opposing pitchers with his elite eye and solid bat-to-ball skills, which earned him a one-year, $6 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. Yet according to The Athletic's Sahadev Sharma, Turner left larger deals on the table because he felt the Cubs gave him the best chance at a World Series title. “At this point in my Source: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/chicago-cubs/n... |
2/25/25 | Cubs officially announce corresponding move to Alex Canario's DFA. Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts will forever be linked to his "breaking even" comments when asked about the team's payroll strategy, and the Cubs' latest move is rightfully being mocked. 2/11/25 | Cubs Plan to Sign Former New York Mets Infielder If First Choice Signs Elsewhere. It has been well over a decade since Justin Turner donned the blue pinstripes of the New York Mets, and his career has seen a drastic shift from where it began. The Mets claimed Turner off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles in 2010, optioning him to Triple-A initially before bringing him back up for four games later in the year. Turner's tenure with New York was not the best, batting only .265/.326/.370 with eight home runs, 86 RBI, and a 95 OPS+ across 895 plate appearances in 301 games. Sanchez Published Feb. 11, 2025, 7:40 a.m. ET Charles Wenzelberg/NY Post One winter ago, the Mets faced the same question at the same position. They had a couple young, unproven third basemen in-house. They debated letting the kids compete for the spot or bringing in a more proven option. They talked with Justin Turner's camp . They expressed interest in Gio Urshela. They did sign Joey Wendle — who provided one more competitor at third yet projected as a utilityman — but decided to pass on any big- or medium-ticket free agent at the spot. 1/24/25 | Seattle Mariners Reunion with Veteran Justin Turner No Longer Seen as Likely. The Seattle Mariners are reportedly no longer likely to bring back veteran free agent Justin Turner this offseason. Apparently, the team plans to use veteran Donovan Solano as its right-handed hitting first baseman, negating the role that Turner would have played. There's also the possibility the Mariners reunite with Justin Turner, but their acquisition of Solano makes that less likely. In 48 games with the Mariners after the midseason trade from the Jays last year, Turner hit .264 with five homers, 24 RBI and a .363 on-base percentage.
