3/08/25 | Philadelphia Phillies Option Reliever To Triple-A Following Spring Game. Cuts are beginning to happen across Major League Baseball, and following the Philadelphia Phillies' spring training game on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, they announced a move of their own. Per an official announcement by the team, they optioned reliever Max Lazar to their Triple-A affiliate. While that's not overly surprising, the right-hander was in the mix to earn an Opening Day bullpen role with plenty of jobs up for grabs this spring following the departures of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez in free agency. The additions of Jordan Romano and Joe Ross seemed to backfill those openings, but manager Rob Thomson has freely talked about competition, so a good showing could have earned Lazar a spot. 8/28/24 | Phillies Notebook: Back so soon, reliever Max Lazar ready for whatever comes next. Max Lazar may have expected the first call. After 5.2 innings in the big leagues, the Phillies reliever was optioned to the minors on Sunday, despite retiring 17 of the 20 batters he faced. The reason behind that call circumvented the required 15-day option period in the minors, allowing Lazar to stick around even after Wilson returned Wednesday following the birth of his son. “Mentally, it was tough being sent down, but that's how it works when you're a rookie reliever,” Lazar said, adding that he was taken by surprise at the quick turn of events. 8/12/24 | A Jewish baseball event so rare it has only ever happened three times before. The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-1 in Phoenix on Saturday night, but Jewish fans might care less about the outcome than about a rare phenomenon in baseball history — an all-Jewish battery. Phillies Jewish pitcher Max Lazar made his major-league debut in the bottom of the 7th inning, throwing to Jewish catcher Garrett Stubbs, and got Kevin Newman to fly out to right field to end the inning. The Diamondbacks' designated hitter has been red hot in August, hitting .346 with four homers and eight RBIs, but Lazar whiffed him on a 93 mph fastball.
