Despite playing for a Washington Nationals team that's 28 games under .500, James Wood has impressed in his sophomore season. Ronald Acuña Jr. (2019) and Mike Trout (2013, 2014) are the only other players in MLB history to reach those heights at age 22 or younger, per OptaSTATS. 8/26/25 Nationals Star Duo Disappointingly Contributing to Team's Lack of Success Offensively. The Washington Nationals are at a talent disadvantage most nights they take the field, meaning they need to play near flawlessly to have any success. Throughout the season, James Wood, their left fielder, and CJ Abrams, their shortstop, led the way offensively. Wood was breaking out, cementing his status as one of the best young power hitters in the game, making his first All-Star Team. Abrams made the National League Team last year.

8/21/25 James Wood hits a 3-run homer and the Nationals beat the banged-up Mets 9-3 to win series. WASHINGTON -- - James Wood broke out of a slump with a three-run homer, Riley Adams hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, and the last-place Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 9-3 on Thursday to take two of three from their banged-up NL East rivals. Wood's opposite-field shot to left in the ninth was his 26th homer of the season but just his second since the second-year slugger played in his first All-Star Game. 8/19/25 Nationals Provide Injury Updates On Former All-Star and Top Prospect. The season has not gone as the Washington Nationals hoped it would. Before the year, there was excitement around the young core of James Wood, CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore and Dylan Crews. Although Crews hasn't found his footing, the players who were the return for Juan Soto have all been All-Stars. The Nationals brought in Nathaniel Lowe as one of their veteran bats this winter, but many of those offseason additions have been moved on from, either by release or trade deadline moves.

8/17/25 Nationals Claim Former Dodgers Pitcher Off Waivers, Option Jose Tena. The Washington Nationals are in an evaluation period for the rest of the season. While some of their stars like James Wood, MacKenzie Gore and CJ Abrams have firm places on the roster, there are others who are either fighting for their futures with the franchise or are trying to prove they should be in that category with the elite trio. Washington likely will get a look at as many arms as possible during the stretch run, seeing how some of their minor leaguers perform at the Major League level. In an announcement made by the team, they revealed they claimed right-handed pitcher Julian Fernandez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester.

8/12/25 Nationals Promote Another Prospect, Assign Two Rookies Their Affiliate Team. The Washington Nationals have had a difficult 2025 season in many regards, but despite that, with their young core producing at a strong level, they at least have some hope for the future to build around. James Wood, CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore and Dylan Crews make up some of the current group, and with more prospects on the way, there is a chance for this to be a competitive team soon. With their 2025 MLB draft class being rather impressive, there is more room to grow as a franchise. Recently, the Nationals moved the No. 5-ranked prospect in their system, Alex Clemmey, up to Double-A Harrisburg, signifying his second promotion since being drafted back in 2023.

8/11/25 Nationals' Rebuild Appears To Be Starting Over After Years of Struggles. The Washington Nationals were able to win their most recent series against the San Francisco Giants, but this is a team that has a lot of issues. As expected at the trade deadline, the Nationals were one of the top sellers, moving most of their veterans on expiring deals. Since 2019, Washington has been one of the worst teams in baseball, and despite a couple of attempts to burst out of their rebuild, it hasn't happened. Despite James Wood emerging as a true young star, there isn't much else to be optimistic about.

8/09/25 Nationals Slugger James Wood Snaps Frustrating Homerless Drought. Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood came out of the All-Star break with a home run hangover. The most consistent player in the lineup for the first half of the season, Wood struggled to find his footing to start the second half. In his first 18 games post-break, Wood slashed .130/.221/.174 with no home runs and two RBI. For a player that has had consistent success at the MLB level since he arrived in 2024, this was his most consistent slump.

7/27/25 Nationals make decision on trading MacKenzie Gore. The Washington Nationals are clearly trade deadline sellers. Gore is a bit older than the likes of James Wood, C.J. Abrams and Dylan Crews, and he has only a couple years of club control left. "The Nationals say that their prized young core of James Wood, C.J. Abrams, MacKenzie Gore and Dylan Crews is staying put."

7/25/25 Nationals Rookie Brady House Has Quietly Been Very Good Over First Month in MLB. With August just over the horizon and the dog days of summer in full effect, the Washington Nationals have remained one of the worst teams in all of baseball. The Nationals will enter Friday night's matchup against the Minnesota Twins with an abysmal 41-61 record, a mark that ranks second worst in the entire National League behind the Colorado Rockies. The only real silver lining to be found for Washington amid their futility this year has been the emergence of a talented group of young players who the team hopes will ultimately lead the organization back to postseason success. Star sluggers James Wood and CJ Abrams have received a lion's share of the coverage in this regard, but there has also been another youngster who has quietly been finding his footing since his recent call up.

7/21/25 Nationals Star Insists Home Run Derby Isn't To Blame for Prolonged Slump. One of the lone bright spots surrounding the Washington Nationals this season has been the emergence of James Wood. After putting together a good stretch when he was called up on July 1 during the 2024 campaign, the slugging outfielder has started to become a household name, earning his first All-Star Game selection this year and an invite to compete in the Home Run Derby. Wood's struggles have extended far beyond just that stretch, though, with him going 4-for-40 at the plate with four walks and 18 strikeouts since July 3, the game where he went 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBI against the Detroit Tigers. "No, I don't really buy that," he said, per Mark Zuckerman of MASN.
