4/22/25 Cubs could cut ties with 22-year-old rising star in Sandy Alcantara blockbuster. The Chicago Cubs are off to an excellent start to the 2025 season, but to make a deep playoff run in a stacked National League, they may very well need extra firepower. Compared to the other top NL teams, the Cubs don't have a stacked rotation. Shota Imanaga is a serviceable number-one, but the loss of number-two starter Justin Steele means the Cubs could be relying on smoke and mirrors to hang with the other contenders. For that reason, the Cubs have long been rumored as suitors for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner who made his return from Tommy John surgery on Opening Day.

In a game the Cubs would win 4-3 against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, Imanaga had just breezed through the sixth inning. Imanaga had 10 days in between appearances, only throwing bullpens after his Opening Day start in Tokyo rather than making another spring training start. Cubs manager Craig Counsell cited exhaustion as a reason for the approach, making a point to say that Imanaga wasn't injured.

3/09/25 Nearing the end of a short spring, Dodgers, Cubs make final preparations for season opener in Japan. Shohei Ohtani’s bat is ready for the Los Angeles Dodgers while Shota Imanaga has looked good on the mound for the Chicago Cubs with less than 10 days remaining before baseball's regular-season opener in Japan. The teams will play two games at the Tokyo Dome on March 18 and 19. The early start to the season has led to a truncated spring schedule for the Dodgers and Cubs. Both teams have managed to navigate the shorter preparation time in fairly good health. They’re trying to keep it that way as they navigate a fun, but unique week that includes long flights to and from Japan, along with a 15-hour time difference between the two locations.
