4/11/25 Lineup: New Red Sox catcher gets first start with club in series opener in Chicago. CHICAGO — As the Red Sox begin their second road trip of the season in Chicago on Friday night, they'll welcome a newcomer to the starting lineup in the No. 8 spot. Catcher Blake Sabol , who was called up earlier in the week to take Connor Wong's roster spot after Wong suffered a pinky fracture Monday night, will get his first start in a Red Sox uniform as Boston begins a three-game set against the 2-10 White Sox. Carlos Narváez had started the last three days in Wong's place. Sabol, went hitless in two late game at-bats on the homestand, hit .250 (5-for-20) with two doubles in six games for the WooSox before being called up. In 123 games over three big league seasons, he's a .241 hitter with

3/20/25 Red Sox set likely 2025 catching plan with latest roster move. With Opening Day just one week away, the Boston Red Sox's 26-man roster is coming into view. On March 20, they decided on their catching tandem for the start of the year. The Red Sox optioned catcher Blake Sabol to minor league camp to leave Connor Wong and Carlos Narváez among the last 45 players in Sox camp.

2/18/25 Red Sox C acquired in trade let Jason Varitek know the heartbreak he caused him. FORT MYERS, Fla. — Boston sports teams caused new Red Sox catcher Blake Sabol some heartbreak during his childhood. And Sabol made sure to let game-planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek know it. The 27-year-old lived approximately 20 minutes from Angel Stadium. He felt disappointment as a 9-year-old — and again as a 10-year-old — when Boston beat the Angels in the ALDS both in 2007 and '08. “I was talking with Tek the other day. I was like, 'Every year we'd win the West and the Red Sox would kick the Angels' butt in the playoffs.' Josh Beckett and all those guys.' I was like, 'I hated you, Tek,'” Sabol said, laughing here Monday at JetBlue Park. Tom Brady and the Patriots also were

2/06/25 Red Sox offseason has been even slower than you may think. While the Boston Red Sox had plenty of needs to address this offseason, they made a few moves not long after the World Series ended. Earlier this week, MassLive's Chris Cotillo pointed out on social media that since Christmas, the Red Sox have only made two 40-man roster moves, trading for catcher Blake Sabol from the San Francisco 49ers and shipping out pitcher Chase Shugart to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1/28/25 Red Sox Given Unique Distinction As Free Agency Hits Next Wave. The Red Sox have plenty of needs to fill, but one of them seems to have slipped under the radar. Carlos Narváez, Blake Sabol, Seby Zavala and Mark Kolozsvary will all enter spring training with an opportunity to win the backup catching job behind Connor Wong, though none of them are going to knock your socks off. Wong, Narváez and Sabol are the only two currently on the active roster, so there's a decent chance that some depth will be added over the coming weeks.

1/17/25 Red Sox Trade 28-Year-Old Rookie To Pirates For Intriguing Recent Draft Pick. The Boston Red Sox have concentrated the vast majority of their offseason transactions around pitching so far, and that trend continued on Friday. Earlier this week, the Red Sox acquired one of their few position players of the offseason in former San Francisco Giants catcher Blake Sabol. In doing so, they designated right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart for assignment.

To make room for Sabol on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-hander Chase Shugart for assignment.

5/05/24 San Francisco Giants Make Several Roster Moves Before Phillies Finale. San Francisco Giants Make Several Roster Moves Before Phillies Finale The San Francisco Giants needed another catcher after Saturday's game and turned over some pitching as well. Author: Matthew Postins May 05, 2024 In this story: San Francisco Giants Blake Sabol MLB Jackson Reetz Just one day after the San Francisco Giants put catcher Patrick Bailey to the 7-day injured list for a concussion, his backup, Tom Murphy, is headed there as well. Murphy was moved to the 10-day injured list in advance of Sunday's finale with the Philadelphia Phillies after suffering a left knee sprain on Saturday. That made room for Jackson Reetz, who was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, per a release by the Giants

2/14/24 SF Giants pre-spring training roster projection: How they get from 65 to 26. Over the next six weeks, the 65 San Francisco Giants in major-league camp will be whittled down to 26. With pitchers and catchers set for their first workout Wednesday, let's take a first crack at how the roster will shape up by Opening Day. It's a good bet that Blake Sabol is the only contestant who remains in the organization by the following Opening Day, though with a full set of options the former Rule 5 pick will likely start the season with Triple-A Sacramento. Joey Bart is still around, but as the No. 3 backstop at best without any minor-league options left, the former No. 2 overall pick seems destined to be traded by the end of camp, when he must either be added to the active roster or placed on waivers.

12/06/23 Giants add Minor Leaguers Nick Garcia and Dariel Lopez in Rule 5 Draft. A year ago, the San Francisco Giants had an extremely eventful Rule 5 Draft, both adding and losing a player in the Major League portion (Blake Sabol and Nick Avila, respectively), and seeing a whopping seven more players depart their system in the Minor League portion of the draft. The assumption was that the 2023 Rule 5 Draft would be a quieter one for all of baseball, as it aligned with the truncated 2020 MLB Draft class. It was widely viewed that the Giants could have a reliever taken in the Major League phase.

11/14/23 Why SF Giants left 2 promising prospects unprotected in Rule 5 draft. The deadline to protect players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft came and passed Tuesday with the Giants leaving two of their top position player prospects exposed, betting that both are still too raw to meet the requirement they spend all year on a major-league roster. Shortstop Aeverson Arteaga and center fielder Grant McCray, the Giants' No. 7 and No. 12 prospects according to MLB Pipeline, will be available for any team willing to select them in the Dec. 6 draft and keep them on their major-league roster all of next season, a move the Giants pulled off with Blake Sabol in 2023.

9/16/23 Colorado Rockies game no. 148 thread: Scott Alexander vs Kyle Freeland. The Rockies won Game 1 of today's doubleheader in exciting fashion. After a two-RBI double in the second inning by Blake Sabol and a passed ball-turned-run in the third, Ezequiel Tovar said “hold my beer” and scored three runs on his fourth triple of the year to tie the ballgame. Tovar is now tied for third amongst rookies with four triples. Then, things got out of hand for the Giants in the fifth inning.

9/13/23 Amid league-wide spike, why don't SF Giants steal more bases?. When Blake Sabol swiped second base in extra innings the other night, he set himself up to score the winning run just a few pitches later. “I don't think we win that game without Blake Sabol,” manager Gabe Kapler said a day later. It was an aggressive move from a dynamic athlete — especially so considering his primary position is catcher — two qualities the Giants have lacked this season. Sabol's stolen base was the Giants' first from a player other than Thairo Estrada since July 22 — 45 games and almost seven weeks ago.

9/12/23 SF Giants blow chance to gain valuable ground in NL wild card race. The San Francisco Giants missed a terrific opportunity to gain some ground in the race for the National League's wild-card race on Tuesday night. Hoping to win consecutive series for the first time in nearly two months, the Giants instead managed just a Blake Sabol solo home run in a 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians before an announced crowd of 23,541 at Oracle Park. The Giants allowed one run in the first inning and two more in the sixth as they had a four-game winning streak – their longest since mid-July – snapped by the Guardians, who are merely playing out the string in Terry Francona's final season as a big-league manager.

9/12/23 Giants rally in 10th, edge Guardians on walk-off single. Blake Sabol and LaMonte Wade Jr. connected on back-to-back RBI singles in the last of the 10th inning on Monday night, enabling the San Francisco Giants to catch and pass the visiting Cleveland Guardians for a 5-4 interleague victory. After the Guardians (68-77) had gone ahead in the top of the inning on a run-scoring single by Andres Gimenez, the Giants (74-70) wasted no time reversing things when Sabol hit closer Emmanuel Clase's second pitch for a game-tying single.

9/11/23 Despite miscues, SF Giants earn walk-off win to keep pace in NL wild card race. The San Francisco Giants and their fans are more worried about wins than style points at this juncture of the season – especially with the race for the National League's final wild card spot being so nip-and-tuck. Down 4-3 in the 10th inning, Blake Sabol singled to right to score Joc Pederson from second base.
