In 2024, Johan Rojas proved he simply didn't have what it takes to be an everyday major league hitter. This season, the Phillies instead brought in Max Kepler to play left field and shifted Brandon Marsh to center, where he grades out as a below-average defender. The Philadelphia Phillies are working toward finalizing their 2025 Opening Day roster, and they made one decision on a bench outfielder on Sunday. According to MLB.com beat reporter Todd Zolecki, Johan Rojas has been told that he will be on the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic has spent much of the last two seasons with the Phillies, posting a career triple slash line of .261/.298/.355. One of the things regarding the Philadelphia Phillies that hasn't gotten a ton of attention this spring is the health of Johan Rojas. While most of the discussion surrounding the young center fielder is centered around his struggles at the plate, the thing he has become known for during his time with the Major League club - his defense - is something he hasn't been able to do in spring training. Rojas jammed his shoulder during a Winter League game, and that has prevented him from playing in the field while the Phillies try to build up his arm strength again. Last night, Rawlings and Major League Baseball announced their Gold Glove recipients for 2024, given to the best fielder at each position in the National and American League. As the Philadelphia Phillies get ready for the upcoming Hot Stove period of the offseason, one part of this roster stands out as a clear area they need to upgrade; the outfield. This was something that was circled heading into the 2024 campaign following the massive struggles of Johan Rojas at the plate during the playoffs, but Dave Dombrowski decided to keep things status quo with the young center fielder in the starting lineup after stating the former top prospect would have to earn his spot for Opening Day. Speaking of Marsh, he showed growth at the plate this past year, but also looks to be more of a platoon player because of his issues when facing left-handed pitchers.
