3/09/25 Pittsburgh Pirates Trade Acquisition Takes Small Step in Return From Big Injury. Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz took a small but significant step on Sunday in his attempt to return from a "chronic wrist issue" which will have him sidelined at the beginning of the year. Brief update on Spencer Horwitz — He has started hitting off a tee. The initial timetable said that Horwitz would 6-8 weeks, and we are almost at the four week mark. The 27-year-old infielder was brought in this offseason in the three-team trade that sent Gold Glover Andres Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays.

2/19/25 Pirates outfielders vocal on Oneil Cruz's 'bazooka,' move to center field. The Pittsburgh Pirates did not do much to address the team's lack of offense in 2024. Players like Spencer Horwitz, Ke'Bryan Hayes, and Oneil Cruz are expected to be the future of the franchise. Pittsburgh's 26-year-old star shortstop, Oneil Cruz, is being moved to center field full time. Thus far in his major league career, he has played 202 of his 226 games at shortstop, having made 42 errors there.

2/12/25 New Pirates 1B Spencer Horwitz to miss at least 6-8 weeks following wrist surgery. New Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz is expected to miss most of spring training after undergoing surgery on his right wrist. Horwitz, acquired in a trade with Cleveland in December, will be out at least 6-8 weeks. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington says while Horwitz remains a part of the team's plans in 2025, he did not put an exact timetable on a possible return. The 27-year-old Horwitz hit .265 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 97 games with Toronto last season. The Blue Jays shipped him to Cleveland in December and hours later the Guardians sent him to Pittsburgh in exchange for pitcher Luis Ortiz and two prospects.

1/27/25 Pirates Receive Negative Offseason Review. The Pittsburgh Pirates' inactivity so far this offseason hasn't come as a surprise, but that doesn't mean they are exempt from criticism. Despite having a young core at the major league level with more upper-level talent on the way in the farm system, the Pirates have done next to nothing to ensure that they are capitalizing on their potential window of contention. Pittsburgh has shelled out a grand total of $8 million to free agents, ranking No. 23 in total value among all MLB teams per Spotrac. The Pirates' biggest move came on the trade front, as they acquired former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Spencer Horwitz in a three-team swap that saw Pittsburgh send right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz as well as left-handers Josh Hartle and Michael Kennedy to the Cleveland Guardians.

1/24/25 Pirates Under Fire for Quiet Offseason. With a young and ascending starting rotation that could be capable of elevating a Pittsburgh Pirates team that went 76-86 in consecutive seasons, adding a pair of proven bats felt like a necessity this offseason. Instead, Pittsburgh has only made one addition by trading for left-handed hitting first baseman Spencer Horwitz. While Horwitz is more than capable of helping improve the Pirates offense, he's still a question mark heading into this season given he's played 112 games across two seasons in the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays. With the Pirates having a trio of Paul Skenes, Jared Jones and Mitch Keller and a pair of top 100 prospects, Bubba Chandler and Thomas Harrington, Baseball America analyst J.J. Cooper noted his frustration with the franchise and them sticking with the status quo rather than being aggressive in improving the offense.

1/22/25 Pirates Need Jack Suwinski to Bounce Back. After making only one move of significance so far this offseason by acquiring infielder Spencer Horwitz from the Cleveland Guardians, the Pittsburgh Pirates appear content with relying on some of its in-house options to step up and improve an offense that posted a National League-low .672 OPS in 2024. While platooning Joshua Palacios with Billy Cook is an intriguing option at the position, the club would benefit from Jack Suwinski bouncing back and emerging as a middle-of-the-order bat. Part of the trade that sent Adam Frazier to the San Diego Padres at the deadline in 2021, Suwinski made his MLB debut for the Pirates the following year and slashed .202/.298/.411 with 19 home runs and 1.2 fWAR in 106 games.

1/20/25 [Just Baseball] - Spencer Horwitz: Most Underrated Trade of the Offseason. We do not often get a chance to praise the Pittsburgh Pirates. An organization that has been reluctant to spend money and has not shown a strong enough ability to compete through building from within. However, we need to give them props for the biggest offseason trade. The Pirates made one of the most underrated […] The post appeared first on .

1/08/25 Pirates Could Make Sense For Roki Sasaki. The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a relatively quiet offseason outside of trading for left-handed hitting first baseman Spencer Horwitz. Could a typically quiet offseason have a bigger move lying ahead for the Pirates? Of the remaining free agents, few will make a bigger splash than when Japanese right-handed star pitcher Roki Sasaki decides where he's going to sign. Sasaki was posted by his team, the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball, on Dec. 9 and he'll have until Jan. 23.

1/05/25 Pirates Have Glaring Need Heading Into 2025 Season. The Pittsburgh Pirates have made one significant move this offseason to address a pivotal need when it traded for left-handed hitting first baseman Spencer Horwitz. "The Pirates came into this offseason knowing they needed to improve their offense, and first base and corner outfield were the two positions that needed the biggest boost," MLB.com's Alex Stumpf wrote." They added Spencer Horwitz to play first base, but the outfield has no clarity, especially as the free agent pool is starting to thin. Given Pittsburgh's lack of willingness to spend money in free agency, signing an impact corner outfielder always felt like an unlikely path toward addressing the need.

12/27/24 Guardians' Exciting New Pitcher Comes With Glaring Red Flags. The Cleveland Guardians have swung multiple trades this offseason, and in one of them, they landed a pitcher who is expected to be a top three starter in their 2025 rotation. The Guardians acquired Ortiz from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sending first baseman Spencer Horwitz (who had previously been acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in the Andres Gimenez trade) to the Pirates in exchange for the right-hander.

12/19/24 Former Blue Jays Star Praises Pirates' Pitching. Spencer Horwitz has gotten a glimpse first-hand at how good the Pittsburgh Pirates' pitching is throughout their organization. Horwitz faced the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians, in May of last season and went 10-29 with a home run and 5 RBIs. In that stretch, the left-handed hitting first baseman faced 2024 Rookie of the Year and Pirates ace Paul Skenes twice, and went 2-5 with a pair of singles and a strikeout across the two games. Now, rather than having to face Skenes, Horwitz is his teammate and he won't have to face the rest of the Pirates' pitchers who are coming up the pipeline.

By the time the movie — with a running time of 2 hours, 28 minutes — was over, the first baseman had been traded. 12/02/24 Toronto Blue Jays Infielder Spencer Horwitz Named Potential Trade Candidate. The Toronto Blue Jays are in for a busy offseason, and they may wind up parting ways with one of their most promising young players amid all the action. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand compiled a list of potential trade candidates for each team, and infielder Spencer Horwitz was his pick for the Blue Jays. With All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. eyeing a long-term extension, Horwitz could be blocked at his natural position, making him expendable in Toronto. Horwitz, who made his MLB debut in 2023, appeared in 97 games for the Blue Jays this season.
