4/25/25 Mets manager details tough Brett Baty conversation amid minors demotion. Before the New York Mets' April 25 game against the Washington Nationals, news broke that Brett Baty was getting sent down to Triple-A Syracuse in the wake of Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez getting activated from injury. While Baty knows the feeling of going back and forth between the Mets and the minors, this one has got to feel different, given how great he has been performing of late. This was surely a tough pill for Baty to swallow.

Try it free Brett Baty made the decision as difficult as he could. He apparently did not do enough, though, to make the end result any different. The Mets are making the most logical move in optioning the infielder back to Triple-A Syracuse, The Post confirmed Thursday, with Jeff McNeil set to join the roster beginning Friday in Washington. Removing Baty from the roster means Luisangel Acuña, who has played excellent defense up the middle, who could become an option in center field and who has begun to hit, will remain in

The Mets want to alleviate some of that pressure. The goal this weekend for Baty is simple, with manager Carlos Mendoza saying the 25-year-old needs to have fun again. “I think he needs to go back to enjoying it,” Mendoza said Saturday at Sutter Health Park.

Walton was the last infielder in camp competing with Baty and Acuña for a job. Even so, manager Carlos Mendoza stopped short of saying Baty and Acuña will open the season with the Mets — the team conceivably could pick up a player cut from another camp before Opening Day. The third-baseman-turned-second-baseman has played more games than any other player in camp with the Mets this spring except for one, and has maintained a consistently high level of offensive production throughout. The team's leader in OPS is probably who you expect — Juan Soto, with a 1.217 OPS in 36 plate appearances.
