4/24/25 How Garrett Whitlock Embraced Return To Red Sox Role. The Boston Red Sox saw the best version of Garrett Whitlock in 2021 as a multi-inning reliever who changed the complexion of the bullpen. Whitlock posted a sub-2.00 ERA and he closed out the American League Wild Card Game against the New York Yankees. Boston then tried him as a starter for parts of three seasons that led to injuries and general regression. The Red Sox made the decision entering 2025 to push Whitlock back to the bullpen where he's started to find his way back to form.

4/23/25 Red Sox-Cardinals Blockbuster Trade Idea Ships $81M Two-Time All-Star To Boston. It's a great feeling for supporters of the Boston Red Sox to know their team will almost certainly be buyers at this year's trade deadline. It's Major League Baseball, so nothing should ever be taken for granted. When the deadline arrives, the Red Sox will likely concentrate their efforts on finding pitching. The Red Sox have three trustworthy relievers right now in Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten, and Aroldis Chapman.

4/17/25 No matter the situation, Garrett Whitlock relishes role as 'Swiss Army Knife' of Red Sox bullpen. Whitlock faced seven batters in Wednesday's 1-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays. “He was electric,” manager Alex Cora said. All this with Whitlock only 10½ months removed from an internal brace procedure to repair a ligament tear in his elbow. A multi-inning role in high-leverage situations plays to Whitlock's strengths given he has made 23 starts in his career.

3/31/25 Garrett Whitlock may have found his niche, and more thoughts on the Red Sox. Whitlock had a terrific rookie season as a Rule 5 pick in 2021, posting a 1.96 ERA over 46 relief appearances for a 92-win team that advanced to the ALCS. In the three seasons that followed, the righthander made 23 starts and 34 relief appearances. A series of injuries during those seasons sidetracked what appeared to be promising career to a point where a frustrated Whitlock considered retirement. The plan is to use Whitlock in a multi-inning role to serve as a bridge between the starter and the high-leverage relievers Cora wants to employ late in games.

3/27/25 Mixing and matching with relievers, Red Sox' bullpen plan works like charm. It didn't take long to happen. In the season opener against the Texas Rangers, Cora seized the opportunity to show what he meant. More Red Sox

3/26/25 Why This Talented Pitcher Has 'Hardest Job' In Red Sox Bullpen. Garrett Whitlock might be the greatest X-Factor on the roster for the Boston Red Sox in 2025 as he returns to the bullpen. Whitlock joins a group of leverage arms in closer Aroldis Chapman, Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten.

3/10/25 Red Sox 28-Year-Old Surprisingly Considered Retirement Before Boston Deal. The Boston Red Sox made a great move ahead of the 2021 Major League Baseball season. Boston selected hurler Garrett Whitlock in the Rule-5 Draft and he immediately made a big impact with the Red Sox. Whitlock has had an up-and-down stint with the Red Sox since then thanks in large part due to injuries. One thing that is pretty shocking, though, is Whitlock shared that he considered retirement before joining Boston while speaking to Joe Castiglione, Rob Bradford, and Jackie Bradley Jr.

3/05/25 Boston Red Sox manager expecting strong comeback from former UAB pitcher. Garrett Whitlock hasn't pitched in a spring-training game yet, made his last appearance in a Major League contest on April 16 and had elbow surgery on May 30. Whitlock had made four starts and posted a 1-0 record with a 1.96 earned-run average when he went down last season with damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. Rather than Tommy John surgery, Whitlock underwent an internal brace procedure, which can cut a couple of months off the recovery time.

3/03/25 Alex Cora drops promising Garrett Whitlock injury news for Red Sox fans. This time last year, Garrett Whitlock was gearing up to be a critical piece of the Boston Red Sox's starting rotation. On May 30, Whitlock underwent the internal brace procedure, his second UCL repair surgery in his career. The 28-year-old is still recovering from the surgery and hasn't yet appeared in a spring training game.

2/16/25 Garrett Whitlock could upend Red Sox closer battle after Kenley Jansen departure. Garrett Whitlock wants the ball. After he missed just about the entirety of the 2024 season from elbow surgery, the right-handed reliever is happy to be back on the mound and pitching once again for the Boston Red Sox. Whitlock reared back for 95 MPH fastballs in his first outing of the spring, which kept him to a 15-pitch limit, but still managed to record several swings and misses. With Kenley Jansen officially gone from Boston, there is now a job opening for the closer role.

1/11/25 Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock Enthusiastically Confirms 2025 Role. It's been a rough couple of years for Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock. Whitlock was one of the best relievers in baseball during his rookie season, but that success led him down a difficult path in which he was constantly moved between the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Red Sox have a plan to help the 28-year-old return to form, though. “Let's go back to the bullpen, baby,” Whitlock enthusiastically said Saturday.

12/10/24 Red Sox Quietly Answered Major Question Amid Free Agency Frenzy. The Red Sox have spent the better part of three seasons experimenting with Garrett Whitlock. Whitlock was one of the best relievers in baseball during his rookie season, but that success led him down a difficult path in which he was constantly moved between the starting rotation and the bullpen. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Alex Cora both spoke during the first day of MLB's Winter Meetings on Monday and essentially confirmed what fans have been waiting to hear. Whitlock is headed back to a familiar role.

12/09/24 Red Sox know likely role for Garrett Whitlock but big 9th-inning question looms. The Red Sox' bullpen, much like most other areas of the roster, is still a ways from being fully figured out. Speaking on Day 1 of the Winter Meetings on Monday, both chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Alex Cora hinted that Whitlock, who underwent internal brace surgery on his pitching elbow in late May after beginning the season in the rotation, will likely be used as a high-leverage, multi-inning reliever in 2025.

11/08/24 Craig Breslow provides positive update on Red Sox RHP's rehab. The Boston Red Sox are starting to make their plans for the 2025 season with free agency starting earlier this week. One area the Red Sox will look to improve over the next few months is their pitching, both in the rotation and bullpen. Luckily, they should get a boost from Garrett Whitlock's return. Now, Whitlock should be ready to go in 2025, but Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow isn't willing to commit to a role just yet, as Whitlock has been great as a reliever (2.65 ERA in 80 games) and not as good as a starter (4.29 ERA in 23 starts).

11/07/24 Boston Red Sox Reportedly Unsure How Garrett Whitlock Fits into 2025 Plans. The immediate future for Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock is up in the air. According to Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, the team isn't sure yet what role Whitlock will fill in 2025. “I think we will define it,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said about Whitlock's role Tuesday at the GM Meetings. First and foremost, Whitlock is coming off season-ending elbow surgery that limited him to just four starts in 2024.

11/06/24 Red Sox remain undecided on Garrett Whitlock's role; he's good with either. Righty Garrett Whitlock's role with the 2025 Red Sox is still to be determined. “I think we will define it,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said about Whitlock's role Tuesday at the GM Meetings. Whitlock began both 2023 and '24 in the starting rotation. Whitlock dominated out of the bullpen as a rookie in 2021, posting a 1.96 ERA in 73 ? innings.

9/27/24 As Garrett Whitlock takes big step, he has message for Red Sox on 2025 role. Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock took an important step in his road back from elbow surgery this week, and as he looks toward next year, his one and only focus is health. Whitlock, who underwent an internal bracing procedure on his throwing arm on May 30, played catch Thursday, marking his first time throwing a baseball since the surgery. At that juncture, the Red Sox will once again be tasked with deciding which role fits Whitlock best. The 28-year-old won a rotation spot this spring and made four starts before elbow soreness ended his season but has been bounced back and forth between starting and relieving throughout his career.

7/26/24 Red Sox Reportedly Showing Interest In Surprisingly Available Starter. The Boston Red Sox are looking for ways to bolster the back of the starting rotation and could get a deal done in the near future. Boston needs to add at least one starter over the next few days and certainly could do so. The Red Sox have had a hole in the rotation with Garrett Whitlock out but it doesn't seem like that will be the case for much longer. The 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline is just four days away and it would be shocking if Boston didn't get at least one deal done ahead of it.

7/19/24 Red Sox pitcher suffers setback during rehab assignment. The Boston Red Sox have had their fair share of injuries this year especially to their pitching staff this season with guys like Garrett Whitlock and Lucas Giolito missing the rest of the season and others missing time periodically. One pitcher who was expected to compete for a role with Boston in 2024 who's dealt with injuries all year is Bryan Mata, who was on a rehab assignment after dealing with hamstring and lat issues. Now, the Red Sox have announced that they have returned Mata from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester (retroactive to July 15).
