It's no surprise that imperfections in the lower 29 clubs are surfacing. While it's almost surely too early for any significant trades, worries don't wait for the calendar. Why this Cubs bullpen option is poised for a surprise breakout The Cubs still have this excellent bullpen option waiting in Triple-A By Rich Eberwein | Share on Facebook Share on X Copy Article Chicago Cubs Spring Training | Matt Dirksen/GettyImages Share on Facebook Share on X Share on Reddit Copy Article The Chicago Cubs' main weakness this year is undoubtedly the bullpen. Cubs relievers are bottom-ten in multiple categories this year, including walks (43), ERA (5.17), and strikeouts (79). Several arms have already come and gone in the first month of 2025, including Eli Morgan, Jordan Wicks, and Luke Little. 4/15/25 | Cubs Struggling Reliever Expected to Hit IL After Latest Dreadful Performance. The Chicago Cubs had a hot streak halted on Monday night with a dominant loss against the San Diego Padres to open the series out West after entering the game having won nine of their previous 12 games. All season long, the weakest portion of the roster has been seen as the bullpen, though the unit had been performing relatively well in the last week and a half or so headed to San Diego, giving fans confidence it may be better than initially suspected. The worst performance of the night came from someone who has struggled all season long in trade acquisition from the Cleveland Guardians in right-hander Eli Morgan. Morgan allowed four earned runs on just three hits in 0.2 innings including a moonshot home run to Fernando Tatís Jr. in the bottom of the eighth to effectively put the game out of reach. 4/03/25 | MLB writer pitches trade to shore up Cubs bullpen. Holding a 6-2 lead with just six outs to go, Eli Morgan served up a two-run double to Geraldo Perdomo and a game-tying two-run home run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. before Josh Naylor gave the Diamondbacks the lead for good with a go-ahead double. The 38-year-old Thielbar posted a 5.32 ERA with the Minnesota Twins last year and walked over 11% of the batters he faced, yet he is currently the only southpaw in the Cubs bullpen. 1/04/25 | Chicago Cubs Reportedly 'In the Mix' To Sign Top Free Agent Pitcher Remaining. The Chicago Cubs were always likely to add pitching to the roster both in their starting rotation and bullpen. To this point, the only notable moves the Cubs have made in either department were a trade with the Cleveland Guardians for reliever Eli Morgan as well as signing starter Matthew Boyd on a two-year deal. Chicago not being in on the top guys like Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, and Max Fried didn't come as much of a shock, but thus far, they haven't been in on the second tier, either. 12/12/24 | Cubs Showing 'Real Interest' in Reuniting Reliever Hoby Milner With Craig Counsell. The Chicago Cubs have already made marked improvement to their pitching staff this winter. By trading for Eli Morgan in the early part of the offseason and then adding previous first-round pick Phil Bickford, they have added much needed arms to a unit that has struggled the past two years. Then, they handed a contract to Matthew Boyd to boost their rotation. At this point, the Cubs seem to be searching for a high-profile player. 12/11/24 | Why Chicago Cubs Trading Cody Bellinger to New York Yankees Is Realistic. The Chicago Cubs headed into the Winter Meetings looking to make some moves to help turn their team into a playoff contender in 2025. While it was a solid year for the Cubs in 2024, they fell short of reaching the playoffs once again. Fixing up a bullpen that blew a lot of games last year was certainly one area, and with the addition of Eli Morgan early in the offseason, they are beginning to address that. This came as a bit of a surprise, and with him making over $25 million in 2025, it will likely prevent Chicago from spending in free agency. 12/10/24 | Chicago Cubs and Veteran Free Agent Catcher Reportedly Making Progress on Deal. The Chicago Cubs were a team that wasn't expected to make any major splashes this offseason as ownership wasn't going to open up their checkbook. The Cubs also acquired relief pitcher Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians, who was teammates with Boyd. Chicago looks pretty set in their lineup, as the catcher was the only position people hypothesized could be changed, since last season Miguel Amaya left a little something to be desired behind the plate. Looking to add some competition, the Cubs traded for Matt Thaiss from the Los Angeles Angels on Nov. 20. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/cubs/news/chicago-cubs-and-... |
12/07/24 | Chicago Cubs Confirmed Star Dansby Swanson Underwent Offseason Surgery. The Chicago Cubs are in the middle of what could end up being a busy offseason. At this point in time, the biggest moves they have made were acquiring relief pitcher Eli Morgan in a trade and signing free agent starting pitcher Matthew Boyd. According to a report from MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Cubs star shortstop Dansby Swanson underwent core injury surgery. 11/30/24 | Former MLB Exec Would 'Like To See' Chicago Cubs Sign All-Star Slugger. The Chicago Cubs entered the offseason knowing they had to make improvements to two key areas; their bullpen and backup catcher position. Jed Hoyer and his front office have been able to accomplish that by making trades for rising star reliever Eli Morgan and veteran backstop Matt Thaiss, while then also signing a previous first-round pick and another journeyman to club-friendly deals. Considering the self-imposed financial restrictions placed upon Hoyer by ownership, addressing those two positions early allows them to be players in the free agency market for some high-profile names. Starting pitcher has emerged as the major upgrade they seemingly are looking to bring in, however, without a willingness to spend at the top of the market, there are only a few names that make sense at this point in time. 11/26/24 | Chicago Cubs 'Probably Out' On High-Profile Free Agents This Offseason. After the Chicago Cubs got out to a fast start this offseason to address their bullpen needs by trading for rising star reliever Eli Morgan and signing a former first-round pick to a deal, they also were able to trade for Matt Thaiss to be their backup catcher. The Cubs were able to upgrade these two areas by not spending tons of financial capital, so if they want to go after an elite starter like Max Fried, who they have recently been connected to, they now have that opportunity. Chicago is looking for a starting pitcher to add to their rotation, but it's not known just how much money they are willing to spend. Corbin Burnes is already someone the organization said they wouldn't be pursuing, likely because of his projected price tag, but someone like Fried could be an option depending on just how much he's asking for this winter. 11/23/24 | Non-Tendered Closer Would Be Perfect Fit for Chicago Cubs Bullpen. The Chicago Cubs are expected to improve their bullpen this winter, something the front office already did with their trade to acquire Eli Morgan. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Toronto Blue Jays have non-tendered closer Jordan Romano. Romano, a two-time All-Star, would be an excellent fit in the Cubs bullpen. It's fair to look at the brutal year Romano had in 2024. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/cubs/news/non-tendered-clos... |

11/20/24 | Chicago Cubs Make Another Trade, Acquire Catcher From Los Angeles Angels. The Chicago Cubs have been extremely active on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Jed Hoyer and company pulled off a trade with the Cleveland Guardians for relief pitcher Eli Morgan in a move to help improve a bullpen that struggled during the 2024 season. Now, the Cubs have gone out and made a second trade. According to a report from Jesse Rogers of ESPN, Chicago has acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Los Angeles Angels. 11/20/24 | Chicago Cubs trade for pitcher Eli Morgan: Reports. The Chicago Cubs have made an addition to their bullpen, reportedly acquiring pitcher Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Cubs will bring in the right-handed pitcher to bolster a bullpen that went through plenty of ups and downs last season. It was not immediately known which players would be heading back to Cleveland in the swap. To clear a space on the 40-man roster, ESPN's Jesse Rogers reports the Cubs will designate infielder Patrick Wisdom for assignment. Source: https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/sports/mlb/chicago... |
8/04/24 | Guardians bolster bullpen with two fresh arms ahead of series finale against Orioles. CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians bolstered their bullpen with a pair of fresh arms ahead of Sunday's series finale against Baltimore, recalling right-hander Eli Morgan from Triple-A Columbus and selecting righty Connor Gillispie from the Clippers. The Cleveland Guardians made a plethora of roster moves on Saturday morning as they prepared for the third game of a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals. 5/28/24 | Eli Morgan Activated From Injured List, Guardians Roster Moves. The Cleveland Guardians made a couple of roster moves on Tuesday afternoon that will have an impact on their pitching staff. Eli Morgan went on the injured list on April 17 due to right shoulder inflammation. Cleveland activated him on Tuesday afternoon before their second game against the Colorado Rockies.
