| 7/04/25 | Once the Red Sox top pitching prospect, Bryan Mata remains motivated for the chance to become a big leaguer. “That's crazy,” Mata said about his status. For years, Mata was the top-ranked pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization. At an early age, that combination presented the raw materials of a big league starter. It seemed like a future in the Sox rotation was close at hand. Source: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/07/04/sports/red-... |

Red Sox prospect Bryan Mata fired an eight-pitch perfect eighth inning and reached 96.5 mph with his heater in Triple-A Worcester's 12-0 win over Syracuse on Sunday. It was a continuation of spring training when he remained in big league camp competing for an Opening Day roster until the final day. “It's definitely good to hear something like that — good to hear the big league coach say that,” Mata said through translator/defensive coach Iggy Suarez on Friday at Polar Park. For one Boston Red Sox former top prospect, the journey arrives at a pivotal crossroads within the next week. Right-handed pitcher Bryan Mata has pitched in the minor leagues for the Red Sox for the past nine years, while never making his major league debut. | 3/05/25 | Former Red Sox Prospect 'Raising Eyebrows' At Spring Training. Bryan Mata not long ago was viewed as the best pitching prospect for the Boston Red Sox. Now, the talented right-hander is trying to show the Red Sox this spring training that he still deserves a spot in the organization and can make an impact at some point at the big-league level. Mata, 25, took a big step toward doing that this week when he was lights out during a 20-pitch living batting practice session at JetBlue Park. According to The Boston Globe's Alex Speier and Peter Abraham, Mata struck out Conor Wong, Alex Bregman and Carlos Narváez before getting Rafael Devers to fly out. | 11/23/24 | Red Sox re-sign pair of recently DFA'd pitchers. The Boston Red Sox have needed to make some room on the 40-man roster this week to protect some of their young prospects from the MLB Rule 5 Draft, so they designated right-handed pitchers Bryan Mata and Isaiah Campbell for assignment. After both players cleared waivers, Boston re-signed both to minor league deals for the 2025 season. Campbell, 27, appeared in eight games for the Red Sox in 2024 after Boston acquired him in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for Luis Urias. In those eight outings, he recorded an abysmal 16.20 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and an 8.1 K/9 over 6 2/3 innings. Mata, 25, dealt with frequent injuries in recent years, and in 2024, he appeared in just 11 games in Boston's system. He Source: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/boston-red-sox... |
| 11/21/24 | Some team could get a steal in recently-discarded Red Sox if the hype is real. On Nov. 19, the Boston Red Sox added pitching prospect Hunter Dobbins and outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia to the 40-man roster to protect them from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft. Boston's 40-man roster was full when the two prospects were protected, and two players had to be removed to accommodate them. Former top pitching prospect Bryan Mata was one of the casualties. Mata signed with the Red Sox out of Venezuela in 2016 and posted three quality seasons in the lower levels of their minor league system. Bryan Mata was at Fenway Park and in the Red Sox' clubhouse Friday night — but he's not an active member of the roster. The 25-year-old righty was in town to throw a 20-pitch bullpen in front of Red Sox brass ahead of the club's due date for making a decision on his future Monday. Because Mata is out of minor league options and can't be sent to Triple-A without being exposed to waivers, the Sox must decide on his fate at the end of his rehab assignment, which maxes out at 30 days on July 15. | 5/18/24 | For Red Sox, clock ticking as decision on former top pitching prospect looms. The clock is ticking for the Red Sox to make a decision — once and for all — on someone who was once considered the top pitching prospect in the entire organization. 25-year-old right-hander Bryan Mata was transferred to High-A Greenville on Saturday to continue his rehab assignment, which started Monday with a two-inning outing in the Florida Complex League in Fort Myers. Mata, who is out of minor league options and currently on the 60-day injured list with a left hamstring strain he suffered in spring training, has just 30 days to show the Red Sox what they can do before a decision will be due. June 11 marks the 30th day of Mata's rehab assignment, so by June 12 (unless Mata gets hurt again), the Red Sox will have to either activate Mata to the active roster or place him on waivers, likely by designating him for assignment. | 4/30/24 | On a potential Nick Yorke promotion and the Red Sox perhaps having a breakout pitcher in Single A. Righthander Bryan Mata, who suffered a hamstring injury in spring training that put him on the injured list for the first month of the season, is slated to throw his first live batting practice session at the end of this week. If all goes well, he could start a rehab assignment either next week or the following one. Because Mata is out of minor league options, he'll either have to earn a roster spot by the end of a 30-day rehab assignment or be removed from the 40-man roster. Lefthander Brandon Walter, who suffered a rotator cuff strain in spring training, has yet to start throwing and is working on building strength in the muscles around his shoulder. | 2/25/24 | Red Sox pitcher Bryan Mata sidelined with hamstring strain. Righthander Bryan Mata will be sidelined for an undetermined period after straining his right hamstring. Mata, who has faced numerous injuries during his minor-league career, arrived at camp without options, meaning he must earn a spot on the Sox' parent club otherwise the team would be forced to designate him for assignment. Justin Slaten, who the Sox acquired from the Mets during the offseason, is in the same predicament, making it a two-man battle between the pair of righthanders for a roster spot. The uphill battle for both just became tougher for Mata, who was once a promising young prospect in the Red Sox' system. Source: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/02/25/sports/brya... |
