3/27/25 Phillies announce surprise-free 2025 Opening Day roster. Opening Day is here, which means official answers on the Phillies’ Opening Day roster: The club announced it on Thursday morning, with no surprises. The roster battles in spring training were between Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs for backup catcher (with the former prevailing), a few names for the final bench spot (Kody Clemens won) […]

2/19/25 Marchan healthy and trying to seize the best opportunity of his career. Rafael Marchan has been in Clearwater for six weeks training to put himself in the best position to reach the regular season healthy. If he does, an interesting opportunity with the Phillies awaits.

2/13/25 Why one player may open spring leading the complicated battle for the Phillies’ final bench spot. Realistically, the Phillies have two jobs up for grabs this spring training. One is backup catcher, which is relatively straightforward. Rafael Marchan is the favorite, in part because he’s out of options and Garrett Stubbs isn’t. The other is the final bench spot. That competition is a bit more convoluted. Right now, it’s a four-man […]

9/06/24 Kody Clemens Trying to Force his Way into the Phillies Playoff Roster. Ho hum, another W for the Phillies, who are on a five game win streak, have won 10 of 12, and once again reached the .600 plateau, tied with the Dodgers for Major League Baseball's best record. Clemens was recalled on September 1st and has played four games since. A small sample size, yes, but add it to his season numbers and he's hitting .247 with a .286 on-base percentage and .534 slugging percentage, good enough for a career-high .820 OPS. Rafael Marchan was a good example earlier this year.

3/16/23 Rafael Marchan relishing chance to learn as Phillies' top young catcher. Rafael Marchan's claim to Philly fame will long remain a baseball oddity, the catcher having homered not once but twice in the major leagues before he did so in the minors. The only upside is that 2022's disappointment ended on a pair of high notes for the 24-year-old, in his travel with the big club to the World Series last fall and a successful stint in the Venezuelan Winter League. Marchan had gone 1,027 minor league at-bats without hitting a home run when he got the call to the bigs in 2021 … then got four hits in three games, including a homer against Toronto. Generally a light hitter through the system, he homered again in his 52 at-bats over 20 games in 2021, a year in which he didn't go yard in 242 minor-league at-bats.

9/28/22 Phillies to Hold "Stay Ready Camp" at Citizens Bank Park. Per Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the camp was originally supposed to take place in Clearwater, Fl. but Hurricane Ian had other plans, as it currently moves onshore and has caused residents to evacuate. Catchers Rafael Marchan and Donny Sands, infielders Darick Hall, Edmundo Sosa, and Scott Kingery, and pitchers Michael Plassmeyer, Cristopher Sánchez, Sam Coonrod, and Vinny Nittoli will participate in the camp.

8/03/22 Vaulting past the luxury tax helps the Phillies create their deepest roster in years. The catch is putting them on the 60 day IL is that they are on the major league IL and so that player accrues major league service time and major league salary, which counts against the luxury tax. So far this season, the Phillies have expanded their 40 man roster, while keeping players in their system 5 times in this way with Rafael Marchan and Kent Emanuel starting the year on the 60 day IL, and injured prospect pitchers Damon Jones, James McArthur, and Hans Crouse all spending time there.

11/19/21 Phillies continue their roster shuffle. Stubbs hasn’t hit much in the majors, but he does give the team some more catching depth in the upper minors that can be helpful, particularly if they are even considering trading Rafael Marchan. In an effort to try and continue to add depth to the roster, the Phillies made a series of moves today. First, they added some names their 40-man roster.

11/08/21 2021 report card: Rafael Marchan. Being a catching prospect near major league ready on a team that has invested a lot of money into the current catcher is really, really hard. Rafael Marchan is in a tough position, but an expected change to the rules for this coming season could help him get onto the field more. stats .

6/19/21 Phillies Notebook: Knapp down and out with concussion. Somehow Knapp stayed in the game until being removed in the seventh inning Friday. Considering the good fortune the Phillies have had with callups and unwanted veterans, it’s an opportunity for catcher Rafael Marchan, promoted from Lehigh Valley, to show what he can do. Marchan caught the ninth inning for J.T. Realmuto, still rounding into form after a wrist injury.
