8/15/25 Tigers Skipper Explains His Strategy for Late-Game Bullpen Decisions. The Detroit Tigers needed to bolster their bullpen ahead of the trade deadline this year, and they did exactly that when they acquired Kyle Finnegan from the Washington Nationals, adding a proven closer who can step right into that role with his new team. Because their relief staff was so important during last year's incredible playoff run, it was imperative that the Tigers found some more shutdown guys for the stretch run of this season after that unit showed some cracks in the foundation. With Finnegan in the mix, manager A.J. Hinch now has two shutdown backend guys he can turn to in high-leverage situations, deploying one before the ninth inning without losing someone who can close out a game for them. While he is going to keep some things close to the vest when it comes to how he wants to operate, he did share an interesting bit of information with Chris McCosky of The Detroit News (subscription required).

8/11/25 How Tigers' New Closer Kyle Finnegan Is Handling the Pressure. The Detroit Tigers were able to win a much-needed series over the weekend to help them keep the red-hot Cleveland Guardians off their tails. Since the All-Star break, the Tigers haven't been playing nearly as well as they did in the first half of the season. Detroit is fortunate that their fantastic start to the year helped them build a massive lead in the American League Central that they have been able to maintain since. This was a unit that the Tigers relied heavily on in 2024 to help them come within one game of making the ALCS.

8/10/25 Miguel Cairo on Nationals Reliever Jose A. Ferrer: 'That's My Ninth Inning Guy'. The trade of closer Kyle Finnegan meant the Washington Nationals had to find someone to fill that ninth inning void. Finnegan had saved more than 100 games in his Washington career. It sounds like interim manager Miguel Cairo has made his decision. For now, his guy is long-time set-up man Jose A. Ferrer, a left-hander with undeniable stuff that just hasn't had the chance to close with Finnegan in the role.

8/04/25 Nationals Notebook: Looking for a lifeline after the trading deadline. Major League Baseball's trade deadline has long been a chance for contenders to shore up their weaknesses and pretenders to pad their farm system with prospects. Once again, the Washington Nationals found themselves in the NL East cellar and thusly a seller at the deadline. Last week saw the departures of former All-Star closer Kyle Finnegan, fourth outfielder Alex Call, back end of the rotation starter Michael Soroka, plus spare part relievers Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia. MacKenzie Gore and Josh Bell remain in D.C., despite plenty of speculation that they might be heading elsewhere, which makes sense because Gore has two-plus years before he hits free agency and Bell is hitting .226 with 40 RBI.

8/01/25 Tigers Need Kyle Finnegan to be HIs First-Half Self Down Stretch. The Detroit Tigers needed right-now help in the bullpen if they want to make a strong run when October comes around. Near the end of the deadline, the Tigers acquired Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan for pitching prospects R.J. Sales and Josh Randall. Finnegan is a 33-year-old who made his debut for the Nationals back in 2020 and has only been used as a reliever in his career.
