3/31/25 Pirates' Rough Start Echoes Century-Old Record. The Pittsburgh Pirates have stumbled into the record books — just not the way they hoped. After three games in the 2025 season, the Bucs remain winless, becoming the first team in 101 years to have their first three losses all come via walk-off. The misery began on Opening Day in Miami, where the Pirates carried a 4-3 lead into the ninth against the Marlins. Closer David Bednar surrendered a walk-off single in the ninth inning to Kyle Stowers, sealing a 5-4 defeat.

Bednar struggled last season for the Pirates, with a 3-8 record, a 5.77 ERA in 57.2 innings pitched in 62 games, 23 saves and seven blown saves in 30 opportunities.

2/19/25 Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star David Bednar in Line to Reclaim Closer Role in 2025. David Bednar entered 2024 as one of baseball's best relievers, fresh off back-to-back All-Star appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Just a few weeks into the season, though, the crowd at PNC Park was booing their star closer. Things didn't get much better from there, either, as Bednar dealt with lat and oblique injuries and lost his grip on the closer job by September. Across 62 appearances, Bednar went 3-8 with a 5.77 ERA, 1.422 WHIP, 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings and a -0.9 WAR. Bednar returned to the mound in Bradenton, Florida, for spring training this past week, looking to put that shaky production behind him.

1/24/25 Pirates Closer Addresses Poor 2024 Season. If the Pittsburgh Pirates are to put up a fight in what should be a competitive NL Central this season, they need closer David Bednar to get back on track after uncharacteristically faltering throughout 2024. Coming off consecutive All-Star nods in 2022 and 2023, the Pittsburgh native blew seven saves while posting a 5.77 ERA over 57 2/3 innings and 62 appearances. “I've never been more ready to go, dialed in and hungry to get back to who I know I am,” Bednar said, via MLB.com's Alex Stumpf. Bednar was immediately inserted into Pittsburgh's bullpen after the club acquired him from the San Diego Padres as part of a three-team trade that sent Joe Musgrove the other way in January 2021.
