4/20/25 Forrest Whitley Changed His Number for Specific Reason As Astros Await His Breakout. The Houston Astros and their fans have been waiting for the breakout of Forrest Whitley. The long-time star prospect was expected to be the next ace of this franchise when he was coming up the ranks. But after a suspension and multiple injuries, it took the 2016 first-round pick until 2024 to make his Major League debut. Even then, Whitley left everyone wanting to see more. He only made three appearances, giving up no earned runs but allowed two inherited runners to score while also recording five strikeouts and three walks in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Coming into this campaign, the expectation was that the starter-turned-reliever would have a prominent role in the bullpen. But after suffering a

4/19/25 Astros pitcher changes number to honor 2-time Cy Young winner. Houston Astros reliever Forrest Whitley had a late start to the year, but he is paying homage to an all-time great by changing his jersey number. Whitley wants to honor back-to-back Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum by wearing his number on his back, per Chandler Rome. Lincecum won the award back-to-back with the San Francisco Giants in 2008 and 2009. Whitley is a big fan of the former All-Star pitcher.

3/01/25 Former Houston Astros Top Prospect Heating Up During Spring Training. The Houston Astros have had an extremely intriguing offseason, making plenty of additions to their roster while also making moves to let some key players go. With those two leaving, it has opened up some spots for others to make their name known, and one player who has been doing so in spring training is Forrest Whitley. The 2016 first-round pick for the Astros has taken a decent amount of time to get to the Majors for a myriad of different reasons, but he made his long-awaited debut on April 16 last year. Whitley only made three appearances for Houston in 2024 despite the early promotion.

10/23/24 Next Year Is Now or Never for Former Houston Astros Top Prospect. Forrest Whitley has been a player that is one of the greatest "what-ifs" for Houston Astros fans ever since they took him 17th overall in the 2016 MLB draft. Early on, it looked like Whitley was going to be a future ace of this staff when he posted a 2.83 ERA with 143 strikeouts across 92.1 innings pitched in his first full season of professional baseball. It's well documented that Whitley had his struggles, getting suspended for 50 games in 2018 after violating the MLB's drug prevention and treatment program, and then undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021. Since then, it's been a battle for the pitcher who was the Astros' No. 1 overall prospect from 2018-21.

9/01/24 Houston Astros Give Long-Time Prospect Another Shot As September Call-Up. With the final month of the regular season now here, the Houston Astros sit five games up on the Seattle Mariners and look to be well on their way to taking home another AL West division crown. Because the Astros are in contention for the playoffs and have a roster poised to make another deep run, their September call-ups don't mean as much for the long-term viability of the franchise as others around the league who are wanting to see what their young players can do. Instead, Houston will be looking to fortify this group by taking advantage of the expanded rosters. As can be gatherer from their social media post, they are giving long-time prospect Forrest Whitley another opportunity in the Majors after he was called up to throw in one game back on April 16.

6/20/24 Former Houston Astros Top Prospect Beginning Journey Back to Majors Again. It's hard to reach Major League Baseball no matter how highly touted a player might be, something one of the Houston Astros former top prospect knows all about. After being selected 17th overall in the 2016 draft, Forrest Whitley was ranked No. 1 in the Astros' pipeline for four straight years from 2018-21. Considered the starter of their future, things kept popping up at every turn that prevented him from rapidly ascending within their farm system as he was suspended 50 games for violating MLB's drug prevention and treatment program in 2018, and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021. Whitley looked like he was living up to the hype early on in his career, but after the season-ending surgery he struggled with a 6.53 and 5.70 ERA following his return.
