4/04/25 'He was painting the zone': Tigers' Jack Flaherty quiets White Sox in 7-4 win. White Sox catcher Matt Thaiss started the second inning with a lengthy nine-pitch at-bat. After drawing a walk with two outs, shortstop Brooks Baldwin pounced on a fastball high in the zone to left field for a double. The Tigers pitching staff held the Sox lineup in check, particularly right-hander Jack Flaherty. Flaherty limited the Sox to three hits over 5? innings, allowing one run and two walks while striking out seven.

3/30/25 White Sox offense "one knock short" in series loss against Angels. Catcher Matt Thaiss promptly drew a walk, putting runners on first and second base with no outs. Third baseman Miguel Vargas had a poor at-bat, swinging at the first pitch, resulting in a pop-up for the first out. On the next at-bat, infielder Brooks Baldwin grounded into a double play, ending the rally in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Angels. The Sox were 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position in their series against the Angels.

1/22/25 Angels 2025 spring training position preview: catchers. Angels pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training on Feb. 11. Offensively, he looked like one of the best catchers in the majors for the first four months, before going into a tailspin that caused him to finish the season with a .244 batting average, 20 home runs and a .712 OPS. Backup catcher Matt Thaiss hit .204 with a .622 OPS. The Angels did not use a third catcher for a single inning, which is fairly remarkable.

12/31/24 MLB.com has depressing free agent fit for White Sox on extensive list. There's little doubt that the 2025 Chicago White Sox are not going anywhere. Following up arguably the worst all-around season in MLB history, there's not much for fans of the club to look forward to just yet. To this point, the White Sox have acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Cubs; signed Mike Tauchman, Austin Slater, and Bryse Wilson to one-year contracts; selected Shane Smith in the Rule 5 Draft and acquired reliever Cam Booser from the Red Sox.

12/29/24 Catcher Matt Thaiss ready to settle in with Chicago White Sox after a pair of trades in a ‘crazy’ month. Matt Thaiss has had a unique offseason. The Los Angeles Angels traded the catcher to the Chicago Cubs on Nov. 20. Less than a month later, the Cubs dealt Thaiss to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations. “Being in one place my whole career for 10 years (in the Angels organization) and then the past couple of weeks have been crazy, but I’m excited for a new opportunity and to ...

12/27/24 White Sox' new complement to young catching core Matt Thaiss eager to assist. As offseason trades go, the White Sox getting a backup catcher in Matt Thaiss didn't exactly set the internet on fire. The Cubs acquired Thaiss, who turns 30 in May, from the Angels on Nov. 20, but he became expendable when they signed free-agent catcher Carson Kelly to a two-year deal to complement Miguel Amaya in their catching mix.

12/20/24 Orioles sign former Angels top prospect after offseason DFA. The Angels are completely remodeling their 40-man roster this offseason, at the expense of their former first round picks. Matt Thaiss was the first former first rounder to get expunged from the 40-man, and then came Jordyn Adams. Thaiss has found his way to the Chicago White Sox, and Adams just recently signed with the Baltimore Orioles.

12/18/24 Chicago White Sox News: GM Chris Getz adding catcher Matt Thaiss makes sense. The Sox acquired Matt Thaiss to provide cover in case top-catching prospects Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero are not ready for the big leagues. Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz is not kidding when he views catching as gold.

12/17/24 Chicago White Sox acquire catcher Matt Thaiss from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. The Chicago White Sox added another option behind the plate Tuesday, acquiring catcher Matt Thaiss from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. It was a quick stop on the North Side for Thaiss, who the Cubs had just acquired in a November trade from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations. The 29-year-old had a .204 average (32-for-157) with nine doubles, two ...

12/09/24 MLB rumors: Cubs working on bolstering bullpen, catching. The Major League Baseball Winter Meetings are here, meaning the next week or so should yield plenty of free agent signings and trades from around the league. For the Chicago Cubs, it means a chance to further improve their bullpen and catching depth. ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported on Monday that the Cubs “seem pretty committed to improving their run prevention,” citing their previous trades for Matt Thaiss and Eli Morgan, and the signing of Matthew Boyd. Finnegan was granted free agency in November after an All-Star season for the Washington Nationals in 2024.

12/03/24 These Are the Four Worst Chicago Cubs Contracts on Next Season's Payroll. The Chicago Cubs have tried to be contenders over the last two years, but have fallen well short of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central and cannot compete with contenders in the two other divisions for a Wild Card berth. This could be the offseason to change that with the amount of offensive talent available on the market, but to this point, the club has made questionable additions to their roster, including two that land on this list of the four worst contracts for their 2025 payroll. Matt Thaiss was one of the first of the new additions to the roster, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on Nov. 20 for cash considerations. Thaiss mainly served as the backup catcher for the Angels and looks to do the same for the Cubs behind Miguel Amaya.
