3/10/25 | Versatile Kevin Newman provides Angels with depth to cover for injured infielders. This time last year, Kevin Newman was fighting for a spot in the majors, and it wasn't going well. Newman was actually released by the Arizona Diamondbacks just before Opening Day. What happened after that is the reason that Newman's situation has changed so much, 12 months later. Newman re-signed with the Diamondbacks on a minor-league deal, played briefly at Triple-A, and then became the everyday shortstop in the majors when Geraldo Perdomo was hurt in the first week of April. There are a few in-house options like Luis Rengifo — who can play either second base or third base — but the need for another infielder is to relegate Anthony Rendon to a backup position. Whoever the Angels sign will be short term because of last year's first-round pick Christian Moore waiting in the wings. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/angels/angels-news/angels-l... |

Though they have yet to add an impact player to their major league roster, they did make three minor league signings so far this month. They might not seem like the type of players who can help fill the significant holes in their roster, however, as was evidenced by the signing of veteran infielder Kevin Newman, even the more unlikely names can become contributors when given the opportunity. Here's who the D-backs have added so far in December: RHP Jeff Brigham Right-handed reliever Jeff Brigham hasn't seen much volume in his career.
