4/10/25 | Blockbuster trade idea would send Cardinals $87.5 million slugger to Red Sox. The St. Louis Cardinals are off to a slow start, heading home with a 5-7 record through 12 games. This year was expected to be more of a transitional year than one in which they would compete for a playoff spot. In all likelihood, St. Louis will be out of the mix at the trade deadline and attempt to sell some pieces off. One piece that could be on the move is first baseman Willson Contreras. 4/02/25 | Cardinals Fans Can Finally Let Out Breath For St. Louis Duo. The St. Louis Cardinals have had an up-and-down start to the 2025 Major League Baseball season but Wednesday was at least a positive day for two of the team's most important offensive pieces. First baseman Willson Contreras and shortstop Masyn Winn entered the day hitless to begin the season. Winn was 0-for-18 entering the game while Contreras was 0-for-19. Contreras began the day on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels 0-for-3 to bring his season total to 0-for-22. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/cardinals/st-louis-cardinal... |

3/19/25 | Cardinals Fireballer Linked To Pair Of NL Contenders In Possible Trade Deadline Deal. The St. Louis Cardinals planned on moving several veterans this offseason but after failing to do so, they must wait for this summer's trade deadline to offload some talent. Cardinals fan favorites Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray and Nolan Arenado were three of St. Louis' top trade chips heading into this offseason. Another Cardinals asset who could've been traded over the winter might not finish the 2025 season in St. Louis and is already being floated as an option for a pair of genuine National League contenders. 3/18/25 | How Willson Contreras is embracing major career switch for Cardinals. Learning a new position is never easy in baseball, but St. Louis Cardinals catcher-turned-first-baseman Willson Contreras is certainly approaching it with the right attitude. “I don't think any position is easy to play, but I think the more you enjoy the process, the better you can get at it,” Contreras said, per John Denton of MLB.com. The Cardinals decided at the end of last season to move Contreras to first base in order to preserve his body over the course of the season. 3/08/25 | Postcard from Cardinals spring training camp for Saturday. The Cardinals had only two players in the lineup on Saturday who are expected to play regularly this season, which gave some of their younger players a chance to shine. Willson Contreras and Pedro Pages were the only regulars to make the trip to West Palm Beach for the game against the Nationals after neither played in the game on Friday night in Jupiter. 2/19/25 | Cardinals' muscled-up Willson Contreras swinging for fences. Willson Contreras is casting a broader shadow in St. Louis Cardinals' camp this spring, physical modifications resulting from a weight-room regimen he adopted to bulk up for a move to first base. Contreras jumped from division rival Chicago to take over for the retiring Yadier Molina in 2023. "It feels totally different, but I do like feeling like I have more time to do other stuff, and I'm not so rushed," Contreras said of being freed of time-consuming catching elements, from studying individual hitters on video to memorizing scouting reports and situational data on every batter. 12/18/24 | Yankees Could Save On Pete Alonso By Signing Ex-Cardinals $130 Million Fan Favorite. The St. Louis Cardinals have a solid foundation of first basemen, with three-time All-Star Willson Contreras projected to be the Opening Day starter at the position. Despite the Cardinals' rebuilding this offseason, Contreras invoked his no-trade clause and elected to remain with St. Louis, hoping to help the club stay competitive in 2025. With first base locked down for the Cardinals, re-signing a fan favorite wouldn't make sense. "By adding (Cody) Bellinger's $27.5 million salary in 2025 (of which the (Chicago) Cubs will cover $2.5 million), the Yankees might look at lower-cost alternatives than Christian Walker or Pete Alonso, with other first basemen including Carlos Santana and Paul Goldschmidt among their potential free-agent targets," MLB.com's Mark Feinsand wrote Friday when discussing who the Yankees will sign after declining former Chicago Cubs superstar Anthony Rizzo's 2025 club option. 11/29/24 | Padres Suggested As Potential Option For Cardinals' 8-Time All-Star. Who will be playing the infield for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2025? St. Louis already announced that Willson Contreras will take over the first base spot from Paul Goldschmidt. The Cardinals are set at shortstop for the foreseeable future with 22-year-old Masyn Winn manning the spot. The second base and third base positions are question marks right now. 11/27/24 | Cardinals Would Be Wise To Consider Deal With Yankees Two-Time All-Star. There's a chance that the St. Louis Cardinals don't make as many big subtractions to the roster as initially expected. St. Louis already has made one big announcement by saying that Willson Contreras will be the team's first baseman in 2025. This essentially closes the door on a return of Paul Goldschmidt and hints that Contreras won't be traded despite rumors. Other players who have been consistently mentioned in trade rumors are Sonny Gray, Ryan Helsley, and Nolan Arenado, to name a few. Source: https://www.si.com/mlb/cardinals/st-louis-cardinal... |
11/19/24 | Cardinals $74 Million Gold Glover Predicted To Be Traded To Astros This Winter. The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to be active in the trade market this winter as the front office looks to reduce payroll and open opportunities for the club's young talent core. Following three-time All-Star Willson Contreras and ace Sonny Gray's decisions to invoke their no-trade clause for 2025, the Cardinals aren't left with many options to decrease payroll significantly. Fortunately for Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.'s wallet, a St. Louis fan favorite signed to an expensive contract remains on the trade block and the Houston Astros might be a suitor. 11/13/24 | Cardinals Veteran Catcher Listed As Potential Trade Fit For Padres. The St. Louis Cardinals are set to do something they thought they never would have to do, which is embark on a rebuild of sorts. While the Cardinals have already announced that Willson Contreras will move to first base after he expressed a desire to stay in St. Louis, a trade can't fully be ruled out just yet. Will Leitch of MLB.com listed the San Diego Padres as a team that could potentially pony up in a trade for the now-former catcher. "If made available, Contreras would instantly become one of the best upgrades in the sport, a catcher who can rake, is better behind the plate than he's given credit for and, don't forget, a World Series champion and intense competitor," Leitch wrote. 11/13/24 | Cardinals $87M Star Still Could Cut Ties With St. Louis, Per Insider. The vast majority of the chatter swirling around the St. Louis Cardinals already this offseason has been about the players the club are going to lose rather than possible additions. St. Louis clearly will be making changes and isn't in the same position as it was last year. The Cardinals were aggressive in free agency last year and were one of the first teams to add starting pitching help right when free agency opened up. There has been plenty of speculation about who could be on the move, but one player who seemed like a given to stay is All-Star slugger Willson Contreras.
