Try it free WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Edwin Díaz's mini-slump isn't sounding alarm bells just yet with Mets officials. The Mets closer had a second straight shaky outing Friday, when he allowed two earned runs in the ninth inning before escaping with the save, but pitching coach Jeremy Hefner is satisfied enough with the underlying numbers to dismiss any concerns. “Overall, the stuff and the spin rates and all those things are pretty normal,” Hefner said of Díaz before the Mets' 3-1 loss to the A's . 4/11/25 Reese Kaplan -- Mets Not Operating On All Cylinders Thus Far. Wow, where do you begin to assess a front running start by the team with many cylinders simply not working as expected? Edwin Diaz came to the Mets in a trade along with since forgotten PED king Robinson Cano. For the discounted contract of Cano with $20 million dollars coming from the Mariners the Mets gave up Anthony Swarzak (out of baseball), Gerson Bautista (last playing in the Mexican league alongside their batting champ, Cano), Jay Bruce (out of baseball), Justin Dunn (on the Reds' long-term IL after shoulder surgery) and a name we do remember, Jared Kelenic.

4/01/25 New York Mets star listed as 'overhyped', per MLB expert. If the New York Mets are going to have the 2025 season they're hoping for, they'll likely need a resurgent campaign from closer Edwin Diaz. Diaz is undoubtedly one of the game's most elite relievers when he's at the top of his game, which he has proven numerous times across his career. It remains to be seen which version of Diaz Mets fans will experience in 2024.

3/24/25 Mets predicted to make shocking Edwin Diaz decision. When the New York Mets signed Edwin Diaz to a long-term extension worth $102 million over five seasons, the hope was for him to continue being one of the better arms in Major League Baseball. Unfortunately, the right-handed closer suffered a knee injury during the World Baseball Classic and hasn't been the same since. Perhaps Diaz needs a few more outings before returning to the arm he once was, but in 2022, his 1.31 ERA and elite strikeout numbers showed that he was arguably one of the best closers in Major League Baseball history. For a Mets team looking to be a World Series contender, having an elite back of the bullpen would be ideal, but his 5.40 ERA in Spring Training hasn't been promising.
