3/15/25 Houston Astros Worst Contract in 2025 Is for Player No Longer on Their Roster. Following the 2024 season, arguably the biggest need the Houston Astros had was at first base. The team thought they addressed the issue when they signed veteran Jose Abreu away from the Chicago White Sox ahead of the 2023 campaign, agreeing to a three-year, $58.5 million deal. Entering his age 36 campaign, the Astros knew there was some risk of a drop off, but no one could have predicted what was to follow. After compiling a .304/.378/.446 slash line in his last season with the White Sox in 2022, his production fell off a cliff in Year 1 with Houston.

3/12/25 Houston Astros Disastrous Free Agent Could Be at End of Line for MLB Career. Following the 2024 MLB season, one of the positions that the Houston Astros needed to find an upgrade at was first base. The corner infield spot was a black hole in their lineup as the three-year, $58.5 million contract the team agreed to with Jose Abreu ahead of the 2023 campaign turned out to be one of the worst deals in baseball. Appearing on the MVP ballot in four consecutive years leading into his free agency, the Astros thought they were getting a legitimate middle-of-the-order producer to help take the offense to another level. Unfortunately for Houston, his production fell off a cliff upon joining the team.

2/07/25 The Los Angeles Angels have reunited most of the Chicago White Sox 2019 starting infield after signing Yoan Moncada. All that is left for the Angels to do is sign Jose Abreu and it will be complete recreation of the Sox 2019 starting infield. Someone should tell the Los Angeles Angels the Chicago White Sox were not very good the last time Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson, and Yolmer Sanchez were starting together in an infield.

11/13/24 Houston Astros Listed Among Top Fits for Slugging First Baseman. The Jose Abreu era was not anything close to what the Houston Astros were hoping that it would be when they signed the veteran to a three-year, $58.5 million contract. It got to a point where the production from Abreu was so bad, that the Astros decided it would be better to outright release the player and pay him not to play for them. Once the veteran was off the roster, three other players took at least one at-bat for Houston while manning first base, though none of them had very much success. Between Abreu, Jon Singleton, Zach Dezenzo, and Aledmys Diaz, the Astros received a combined line of .226/.291/.360 with 18 home runs and 68 RBI, with their .651 OPS tied for 26th in all of baseball.

10/09/24 Former Astros slugger Jose Abreu launches MLB comeback campaign.

9/25/24 Astros could target former MVP to fill first base void this winter. The Houston Astros are once again the kings of the American League West. Jose Abreu didn't pan out, and Jon Singleton hasn't been any better. When the season comes to an end, there will be plenty of first base options available in free agency, including Texas native Paul Goldschmidt. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted that if the St. Louis Cardinals cannot re-sign him, Houston could be a fit.

9/13/24 Houston Astros Former Embattled Top Prospect Could Become Their Missing Link. With 16 games left in the regular season, it's looking like the Houston Astros will complete their comeback after they were last place in the AL West at one point this year. Once Houston gets in, they are a team nobody wants to face. Perhaps the biggest one is at first base. When Jose Abreu drastically underperformed to the point where the organization felt it was in everyone's best interest to cut him, that left a huge hole at that position that hasn't quite been filled.

7/26/24 Former MVP and White Sox Legend Not Expected to Play Again in 2024. Former Chicago White Sox star and American League MVP Jose Abreu is not likely to play again in the majors this season, per a report from Cuban Baseball Insider Francys Romero. Abreu was released earlier this year by the Houston Astros. Jose Abreu will most likely not play in the remainder of the 2024 season, per sources. It is believed that he will take a break and if conditions are right he will return for 2025 with some opportunity with an MLB team.

7/23/24 MLB Insider Links Houston Astros to Trade for All-Star First Baseman. The Houston Astros are heading towards the MLB trade deadline in just over a week with a couple of major needs. One of them is starting pitching and the other is at first base. Earlier this season, the Astros chose to move on from Jose Abreu after a brutal start to the year. Since that move was made, they have been suggested as a team that could swing big at the trade deadline to acquire a first baseman.

7/09/24 Houston Astros Again Linked to Superstar First Baseman Trade. Over the past few weeks, the Houston Astros have been mentioned a lot in trade rumors. As the team has been rebounding their 2024 season and getting back into contention, they are starting to be viewed as a team that could look to pull off a big deal. If they do decide to pursue a big trade, it seems likely that first base would be a position they target. Jose Abreu played first base for a big chunk of the year, but the Astros parted ways with him due to massive struggles.

6/19/24 Insider Suggests Astros' Initial Whiff On Jose Abreu Sparked Massive Mistake. Rewind back to the offseason following the Houston Astros' second World Series title in 2022. When they handed 2020 AL MVP Jose Abreu a then-free agent franchise record $58.5 million over three years, it was thought this team might truly have no weaknesses. Not only did they just add another power bat to their already prolific lineup, but they replaced their departing first baseman Yuli Gurriel. Following the Astros' surprising release of the veteran, they will still owe him more than $30 million for him not to play for this franchise.

6/18/24 The Astros just ate about $30 million to ditch a struggling veteran. Would the Tigers do the same?. The Houston Astros, somewhat reluctantly, said goodbye to first baseman Jose Abreu over the weekend. The farewell included a parting gift of more than $30 million to escape the three-year, $58.5 million contract signed before the 2023 season. Before his signing, Abreu had been one of the best first basemen in baseball for a decade. The 37-year-old was trying desperately to turn things around, even accepting a voluntary assignment to the minor leagues earlier this year.

6/15/24 Astros release former AL MVP Abreu, owe $30.8M. The Astros have released struggling slugger Jose Abreu from their major league roster and still owe him $30.8 million from the deal he signed before last season.

6/15/24 Spencer Arrighetti, Astros take aim at Tigers. Following the release of veteran first baseman Jose Abreu earlier on Friday, the Houston Astros needed a positive development, something that actually resembled the win they mustered later that evening. The Astros blanked the visiting Detroit Tigers 4-0 in the opener of a three-game weekend series that continues on Saturday afternoon. Houston won after cutting ties with Abreu less than halfway through the three-year, $58.5 million contract he signed before last season. Abreu, 37, was a respected figure in the Houston clubhouse, but his prolonged struggles -- he hit .124 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 35 games -- made his release inevitable.

6/12/24 Son of Houston Astros Legend Gets Traded to Powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers. Players struggle across Major League Baseball for different reasons, something the Houston Astros are dealing with right now to a few of their high-profile players. The Astros were hoping some time in Florida for Jose Abreu would help him figure some things out and return to being someone who looked even remotely like he had won an MVP award in the past. Ryan Pressly doesn't have the luxury of getting time away amid his struggles. Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the Toronto Blue Jays shipped out Cavan Biggio to the National League powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers following designating him for assignment last week.
