Brian Barton (OF - STL)
8/18/08 Before Barton sustained a wrist injury in July, his playing time with the Cardinals had dwindled to almost nil. From May 9 until he was placed on the disabled list on July 6, Barton got 70 at-bats in the span of 53 games. So when it came time for his Minor League rehabilitation assignment, the Cardinals made sure Barton took every single day of it. That, of course, also helped ease the roster crunch that comes with trying to carry a Rule 5 Draftee, which is not an insignificant element. But Barton got 73 at-bats in 20 days, more than he'd received in his last eight weeks with the big club. And he hit well. Though his numbers tailed off at the end, he still batted .260 with a .349 on-base percentage and a .466 slugging percentage at Triple-A Memphis. "The last couple games got me, but it felt good to get some at-bats and get a groove back," Barton said. "Hopefully I can carry it to the rest of the season."

Brad Thompson (P - STL)
8/18/08 n Thompson's Major League career, the Cardinals are 16-6 when he starts. He has often stepped in as an emergency or spot starter, and more than a few times he's been Carpenter's stand-in. That was the case once again on Friday, with Thompson named to start after Carpenter came down with a muscle strain in his throwing shoulder. And once again the Cards won.

Chris Carpenter (P - STL)
8/18/08 Chris Carpenter will miss at least one more start. The Cardinals still hope it won't be much more than that. St. Louis placed its ace on the 15-day disabled list on Friday due to a muscle strain in the back of his right shoulder -- the teres major muscle, to be exact. The move was made retroactive to Monday. Carpenter already had been scratched from his scheduled Friday start as a result of the injury. "I think it's a logical move," general manager John Mozeliak said on Friday. "It's precautionary."

Adam Wainwright (P - STL)
8/18/08 Adam Wainwright's Minor League rehabilitation start on Saturday night spurred optimism, even enthusiasm, among the Cardinals. It did not, however, change anything regarding his undetermined role with the Major League club. Pitching coach Dave Duncan reiterated on Sunday that no decision has been made as to whether Wainwright will start or relieve when he rejoins the Cardinals, which could happen as soon as next weekend. Wainwright is recovering from an injured pulley tendon in his right middle finger. It's still conceivable Wainwright could start on Friday against the Braves, or at some point over the three-game weekend series at home versus Atlanta. But it also still is possible that Wainwright will pitch as a reliever for St. Louis when he is activated. The primary deciding factor appears to be the pace of Chris Carpenter's recovery from a muscle strain in the back of his shoulder. "The big thing is getting a feel for where Carpenter's at," Duncan said.

Aaron Hill (2B - TOR)

Chris Davis (1B - TEX)
8/18/08 Davis is slated to move to third base once Hank Blalock returns from the DL. The move will give Davis some position flexibility and give fantasy owners another slot to put Davis who has 11 HR and 32 RBI in just 46 games with the Rangers.
